    I need shoop building advice!

Shoop fist bump!! I have an 8x12 shed that we put up a dividing wall to make it half storage half coop. I see yours has a metal roof too. We are currently putting foam insulation up on the interior of the roof to cut down on heat in the coop from the sun beating down on the metal roof. No...

    Black Sumatra Broody....

Last two nights were spent on the roost bar with all the others. So much for the plans of mice and men.

    Black Sumatra Broody....

Hmm...well she's spent two nights in the nest box. I removed her to the roost each night because I'm still not sure I want to try the chicks with her but I am sure I don't want to clean poop out of the nest box. We'll see where she goes tonight, roost or nest box.

    Black Sumatra Broody....

Annnnnndddddd......today she's not camping in a nest box. So I guess if you want to break a broody, you just have to plan to give her chicks and then post about it on the internet? 🤷‍♀️

    Black Sumatra Broody....

Do black sumatras generally make good mothers? I would expect from mine’s personality she might not. Her name is Betty but I always end up calling her Karen. She seems inclined to go broody these last couple days. And I have a seven chick order from a hatchery due to hatch May 20th. I'm...

    Run screen door

We repurposed some tongue and groove floor boards to make our door. It's basically two doors, an inner and outer with the hardware cloth sandwiched in between. Since the boards were thin, this made the whole door more sturdy.

NEPA Flock Friendly Counties & Townships

Stay out of Luzerne County. Most of the cities in the county go by the county zoning laws which expressly forbid backyard chickens.

Should I worry about 3/4" roof gaps?

Lets see if this works. Here's a link to another member's fix for the gaps under the ridges of the metal roof panels. Something similar might work for your gaps between the purlins too. If the link doesnt take you directly to it, its post # 95...

    Camera to catch predator

How is your wifi signal out there? And do you have an outlet near by where you'd mount a camera? I have this camera from Amazon. It has a two lens system for a zoomed out and zoomed in view. It tracks movement and stores video to a memory card. The stored memory card videos are easy to retrieve...

    Sefi's Shoop Progress

That could be possible I suppose, but the black chicken is an OE and also has a beard/muffs with no feather loss. Big Momma is also top of the pecking order so I cant see another chicken picking at her.

    Sefi's Shoop Progress

We put some finishing touches on the shoop today. This plastic strip is a replacement strip for a door way. Fits perfect to block leaks from the top of the nest box door. We also installed a 650 CFM fan next to the door to help circulate air. On really hot days, I can also fix the door wide...

    Bit if a dilemma here

Since you are in western PA you should be able to get a shed from Steel City Sheds in Ohio. I’m in NEPA and jumped on one of their free delivery specials. I got an 8x12 coop shed delivered for $2200. That’s with tax and a window added to the back wall opposite the door which I recommend, it lets...

Suggestions for a coop camera that live streams to a desktop?

I have a camera by Foscam in the coop. It wasn't super cheap, but it also does pan/tilt/zoom which is what I mainly bought it for. It does everything else you are looking for. It will live stream to a program installed on my desktop or an app on my cell phone. They have cloud storage or you can...

    Construction near coop

When we were building our permanent coop/run, the work area was directly next to the chickens temporary coop. They quickly got used to a variety of noises: circular saw, miter saw, hammer drill, sander, planer, staple gun, bulldozer, humans cussing out uncooperative wood…you name it. They very...

Looking for thoughts and experiences re: hardware cloth

Since our coop is a shed raised up on skids and further raised up on pavers to help level and spread the sheds weight, we didn’t have room to put a horizontal apron between where the run butts to the shed. So we did a 1.5 ft buried vertical apron there and stapled to the bottom of the shed...

    Getting Started Composting

Lots of good information there to break down (see what I did there?). My current run is bare earth covered by 4-6 inches of wood chips. In the coop I have horse stall pellets on the floor and the pdz covered poop board under the roost. I don’t mind scooping it, it takes maybe 2-3 minutes while...

    Getting Started Composting

I have a garden and now I have chickens. The coop has a poop board with PDZ/sand that I scoop poop from into a 5 gallon bucket every day. I'd like to start composting the chicken's poop to help enrich my garden. As we live next to a steep wooded embankment, in the past all of our garden and...
