Thank you, this was an ideal learning experience. Concern something was wrong pushed me to learn more, finding out nothing was wrong, was an unexpected turn. Now I am more aware and better able to keep an eye out (regularly) for my chickens health.
I'm sorry to hear about your pullet. Glad she...
I took these the night following my first reply. The weekend has been busy so I apologize for the delay. Here are the four clearest pictures I could get. If you didn't know. Chickens know when you try to photograph them and instantly become camera shy and very fidgety....
I will work on some side pictures this evening when their crops are full again. They only seem to stay still when it doesn't matter. As soon as I want to check them or take pictures, they become like a school of fish...
I appreciate your insight and thought process. I would like to ask if you might have such insight with regard to the nutrients and effects of raw pumpkin?
I made a post that details why I ask. Enlarged crop issue...
My flock is 10 barred rocks hens. Allroughly 8 months old. They stay in a large run most days and have access to gravity fed feed tubes and a 5-gal waterer when not in coop to sleep. I have never noticed a large crop before for any of them, their crops/chest area has always seemd even on both...
Not necessarily for probiotic benefit, more so just cleansing the pathway food travels to the crop and beyond.
Plain Greek yogurt is a favorite treat they get every once in a while. But I have to buy some just the chickens or I'll eat it all. 😆
So pretty straight forward question as titled. As opposed to my wife throwing out fennel seeds since she never uses them, I did a search in the forums and found it can be useful for impacted crops.
Since none of my flock is impacted. I wonder if anyone knows or has experience serving a dish...
Thank you for asking this.
I have 10 barred rock and its nearly impossible to tell them apart without the zip ties. Still, no cameras for nesting box area and the last 3 days they laid: 4 eggs, 4 eggs, and yesterday was 6. Most of them must be taking turns at this point but I had no idea how...
So the heavier or Dual-purpose breeds are less likely to 'fly' because of their weight/mass. Say some Barred Rock for example. Some of mine are starting to lay but none have made it higher than 3-4 feet high. I was thinking they might end up on the top of the 6' tall run wall.
Not sure for...
Thank you for your commenting on this.
This morning I noticed 2 no-shell eggs on the coop floor. Possibly layed form the rooosting bars which are about 3 feet off the floor.
The flock is 10 barred rock, all 19 weeks. Only 2 are laying so far and they are normal.
I wonder if 2 others tried but...
Hey hey!
Well this particular post is a little dated. Since the run was assembled, I have build a water reservior. It's an insulated 5-gallon-bucket stand with walls that feeds 1/2" PVC with several self-filling watering cups.
A light duty spring pushed an empty cup up, opening the valve, it...
Just like an single x-ray gives you a year's worth of sunlight/UV exposure (supposedly), so my office was getting bombarded with years of dusting in only days. So in a mad rush, the family pulled together to get our coop built. We purchased build plans from April Wilkerson (search Youtube for...
I had hoped to leave a Flip N Slide mouse trap out near the coop to keep the mice at bay or better.
I lent one to my brother in law when cleaning out their rental from hoarders and got to watch an epic video of him dumping a bucket worth of dead mice it had caught.
Anyways, back to the topic...
Thank you. I should have mentioned I plan to build a DIY PVC system for the food and water in the run once done but it doesn't affect the need for a bigger one now. Thanks for your wisdom.
I have ten 5-week old barred rock chicks. My feeder a tin, 14"'ish long style with 7 feed windows on each side of the slide-off top. Every time I fill up the feeder, all the chicks flock to it. I refill it once a day, sometimes twice, much like their waterer.
In your experience, is this big...
About 2 hours inward, where the desert starts. Ha! 65 is shirt weather all day! It was probably closer to 50 or 55.
Phew, 32 is COLD. I know it can get much colder but at 32, I want more than a light jacket.
I jumped to page 7 and see you got a new coop. Was this a swap upward from the rent-a-chicken or did you buy your own?
I just bought supplies from Lowes to build the coop I have plans for. It's supposed to be 10-15 chickens , the materials ran about $500 w/ tax here in CA where everything is...
