    Feathering picking or mites?

2 of mine are silkies too. Never have confined them to the coop. They go out and are rarely in the coop besides roosting and laying. I think you’re right about the space outside though maybe. I left for 2 weeks on vacation and left my hubby to take care of them. Maybe 5-6 were missing feathers...

    Feathering picking or mites?

I don’t think they are crowded. 8x10 coop, with 12 external nesting boxes. 2-8’ roosting bars, 1-5’ roosting bar. Lots of open space. The run has a 12x16 covered area with the dust baths and roosting bars. There’s another run area attached that’s not cover but it’s still be snowing here in...

    Feathering picking or mites?

Also. It’s only right there on their neck and just noticed it on my buff Brahmas head. My satin silkie is missing feathers on her head but that’s from bullying. All my chickens are 9-10 months old.

    Feathering picking or mites?

Here are pics of a few of my hens. I have 23 total and it’s not on all of them. Maybe 1/2. Their skin is not red. They are healthy and are fed organic non gmo no corn no soy scratch and peck layer feed. I put strong animals both electrolytes/vitamins and prebiotics/probiotics in their water with...

Thanks. I don’t see any signs of mites. No bullying. She’s pretty high up on the pecking order. Her and about 3 others (I have 23) have the same color eggs so hard to tell if it’s been only 2 days or 5. My eggs went from 16-18 day to 8-14 day the past 2 weeks. I gave her the calcium pill and...

I was thinking that. What is the treatment for this that I’d be able to do? Or is it too much and better to dispatch

I don’t think so. No vets that treat chickens in the area either.

9 month old buff Orpington. Been laying since end of October. I checked to make sure everyone was in coop last night. Everyone was there no problems. This morning as I went out to feed them the fermented feed (have access to dry feed all the time) she was laying in the run and barely able to...

    Sifting Hemp

What are you successfully using to sift your hemp bedding? I have no problems sifting the coop fresh on my poop board but can’t seem to find the right shovel/rake to sift my hemp. I’m not looking to get every dropping but the ones that are big. Thanks! Pics appreciated!

    Hello Chicken enthusiasts

Welcome! BYC is a great place to get plugged in! Its helped me out a ton as this is my first year with chickens. Fair warning what they say about chicken math is REAL! I started with only wanting to keep 8.......I'm up to 23 now. I've added all different kinds of breeds. On your profile it...

Optional Non Pine shaving Coop thoughts? I'm allergic to the pine bedding.

I had the same issue with the pine shavings. It was terrible and I'm not allergic to things like that. I switched to Hemp bedding and its great! I use Coop Refresh (pic) on my poop shelf but price went up recently so I'll be switching to Stall Fresh. Seems to look the same. I started using FSL...

To vent or not to vent

gotcha! We live in Soldotna/Kenai. Its def been a rough summer! I have not made the run predator proof yet, not sure if I'll have the time and money to get it done before this winter. Don't really see bears where we live, moose haven't messed with them, have some stuff to keep the flying...

To vent or not to vent

Correct, its still a pretty cold and wet winter. Looks like its going to be again. Almost freezing temps already and lots of rain. Snow on tops of mountains. Delayed Summer, Short Summer, Wet Summer. Winter is coming fast too.
