Mine eats full-blown peices of plastic. Im not even sure how she finds them. After the neon purple mushroom she ate and all the glass shards (again, where is she finding these?????) I stopped worrying. They will be fine.
Nuthatched is so right.
If there is not a vet, that will be on you, and I can 100% vouch that is NOT fun and very stressfull. I have successfully saved mine from dying twice. Do not take them to a vet who knows nothing about chickens. A vet almost killed one of mine.
How are chickens easy to take care of????? Mine are far from easy. They need me to let them out of the run for at least an hour a day (usualy more), they get mad if I clean their coop or move ANYTHING, they have eaten all the plants in our entire yard, and they are so picky about what they eat...
Do not feed them only food scraps unless that is your only option financialy. It is not healthy for them to eat only food scraps and no chicken feed. Things to not tell your mom:
Chickens will destroy your yard and garden
They are a lot of work (an hour a day at least)
Things to tell your mom...
Lucky me, I actually have a neighbor who used to be a chicken vet, and raise chickens, and she helps with my anxiety. I wouldnt have taken the chicken to the vet, but she was on vacation.
Be carefull about vets. Make sure they know what they are doing. I had a vet almost kill one of my chickens. The best thing is to have a neighbor or friend who knows things who can give your chickens checkups and help if they get sick or injured.
The list of things mine has eaten would scare any pet owner. Esther has eaten: a drop of paint primer, metal, beads, plastic bits, shards of glass, modpodge off my fingers, a NEON purple mushroom, string, paper (my homework :/ ), one of her feathers, fabric, and some other things I forgot. She...
I give mine oatmeal as a treat on cold mornings, invite their favorite people over every year for their adoption-day, and sometimes take them inside when the weather is nice for a little spa and checkup. The spa consists of an epsom salt bath, oats to snack on, and a blowdry. Depending on whos...
Ok yall, I'm back. I got tired of the internet tbh. Its been a while, here are my chickens now:
Not sure if I had Hazel last time I was on here, she's the orange one.
Everyone is doing great, and Im approaching 3 years of having my first 3 girls! Sorry if anyone freaked out and thought I had...
If you need help finding a better spot with the materials you have available, you can always ask, and the people here will help with ideas (they are super good, youd be surprized). Sorry, I was not trying to say you are bad. Some people just don't know better and do have resources, and I wasn't...
They like mirrors and musical instruments. I would see if you could get her some chicken pain killers if she is in pain, because that will make her feel a bit better. I'm sorry about your hen, this must be hard on you.
Also, if you trimmed their beaks, that hurts. You can't do that without painkillers. And shouldn't do it in general. It may solve pecking problems but does not adress the root cause, lack or space.
