What is wrong with my duckling’s preen gland?

These are the best photos I’m going to get I think. So if this is the gland, it looks more like a small cyst with hair coming out of it. It’s round, raised, and yellow under the skin.

What is wrong with my duckling’s preen gland?

The black area in the gland appears to be hair-like. Is that normal? I’m not terribly familiar with this gland, but all the photos I see on Google show just the gland with nothing sticking out of it.

What is wrong with my duckling’s preen gland?

Sorry I was trying to hold my phone to take the photo without alerting Harvey I was messing with him lol. I’ll try to get better photos this evening. I first noticed it only because of the little yellow pieces. When I moved the two pieces away from the gland, more pieces came out. I think it...

What is wrong with my duckling’s preen gland?

Is this a clogged preen gland? I’m using Q-tips to assess it as it’s pretty sensitive for him. There are little yellow deposits around it and coming out of it, almost like little pieces of cracked corn.

Hi! I’m Harvey’s mom and new to the community. I could use some advice.

Good news! When I first got Trudy back in 2020, my immediate neighbor and I each got some chickens from our other neighbor who was moving and had to rehome them. I took five and my immediate neighbor took seven. Last week I asked if she had any female chicks or hens for sale so Trudy wouldn’t be...

Duckling with wry neck and slipped tendon

Harvey is mine now. I don’t know if he’ll ever be able to fly, but I’ll clip his wings if I have to. I’m not handing him over to anybody for them to turn around and euthanize him or use him for research. He’s no burden to society or threat to the ecosystem in my care. And if people can raise...

Duckling with wry neck and slipped tendon

Yes as long as he isn’t suffering. He would be easy prey for both animal and human predators in the wild.

Duckling with wry neck and slipped tendon

Thank you for the information. Should I try surgery sooner than later or wait until he’s reached a certain stage in development? When I brought him to the vet at two weeks old, the vet gingerly tried to pull the tendon back into place but was hesitant. He was placed on Meloxidyl to help with...

Duckling with wry neck and slipped tendon

Hi everybody! I just joined this site yesterday for support for my Muscovy duckling Harvey. He (or she, not sure) is around 8 weeks old now, and I’ve had him for 7 weeks. He was a wild duckling my neighbor found, but due to his breed, wildlife rehabbers wouldn’t take him. He has wry neck and a...

Hi! I’m Harvey’s mom and new to the community. I could use some advice.

Thank you for the advice. I hope Harvey gets better and can have a good quality of life, but I’d be truly surprised if he could ever mount a chicken or a duck, especially one that is not interested in him. He will either need the left leg partially amputated, surgery, a prosthetic, or just use...

Hi! I’m Harvey’s mom and new to the community. I could use some advice.

Hi! They have not been introduced yet but I may do that this weekend. However, I don’t want to risk Trudy getting sassy and injuring Harvey. He’s got enough hurtles right now. Trudy stays outside in my side yard, so my dogs visit her multiple times a day to potty. Harvey has been inside only...

Hi! I’m Harvey’s mom and new to the community. I could use some advice.

    1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens? I bought a chicken coop in 2015 but didn’t finally get chickens until 2020. My neighbor was moving and needed to rehome her flock, so it seemed like the perfect time to get some. I ended up taking 5. (2) How many chickens do you have...
