    Wild Chicken populations?

I don't think I would do this for ethical reasons... but I have 660 acres of woodland. My incubator setup, pumps out 270 chicks/18 days. If I selected the best possibly free ranging breed and If I cranked everything to the max, raised them til close to maturity and released them to free range...

How many birds can fit "comfortably"

I have a run that is 25'*50' and a coop that is 10'*10'*10' (2x4s at around 8 feet of height and lower). They are staggard so I can make use of all the up and down space. I would still like to be able to walk under it, so I don't want to fill ALL of the room in with nesting bars. Most standard...

Eggs in Hatcher flat or in holder?

Should I lay the eggs flat on the nesting paper in my hatcher (they roll around a lot of space, afraid they may break taking in and out) or Should I leave them in the egg rack holder that holds them fat side up? The rack fits inside the hatcher box. They are made of hard plastic.

    Roo? What kind?

I have a run of what was supposed to be 8 RIR, 3 Starlight Green Egger and 3 ISA Browns. All were supposed to be pullet, mistakes happen. But this one looks nothing like the rest and its comb is growing faster than the others. I am not sure how old they were when I purchased them at Tractor...

Dedicated Hatcher, can/do/should you add food/water?

I am new to incubating and my incubator came from a neighbor bundled with a dedicated hatcher. Seeing as how it has a slot for different hatching(s) and different times... should I add food/water to the hatchery for early hatchers? I know this is not a major concern for most people... but if I...

    Incubator/Hatcher this any good?

So I have been raising chicks/chickens for a few years now. I kind have been buying pullets from the local feed stores and I was wanting to cut them out/increase meat production for canning/jarring. My neighbor was starting up a business and through bad blood wanted out. He has these, said they...

Can they see enough to get used to each other?

I have about 14 chicks, about 3 weeks of age maybe 4? They have their own cage which Is up on top of their nesting boxes (screwed into place) I started them inside, but their coop has power so letting them get used to the other chickens. I wrapped their original cage in a layer or two of chicken...

    Moving them early

Generally I like to keep the chicks inside, when really young (helps get them used to my wild children). While that is still a non-issue I would like to move this batch outside sooner, so I can bring in a new batch. Is 1-2 weeks (post birth) too soon to move them inside the coop (allowing time...

    Rooster Harvested

So I have had the one rooster since he was a baby, raised him (his brother who was harvested early in age, due to genetic issues). He was great, until he wasn't... started picking on my ducks (was okay with him attacking me or other non-flock which he did). Would just run them and kick them...

Certain breeds (Deserve the Darwin award?)

Anyone notice certain breeds are really smart, while others are well... would be better off if they were a flower and could not move? I have noticed this more with Easter Eggs/Green eggers. IS it normal for them to be suicidal/kill themselves? I have raised wydottes, barred rock, polish...

    Duck or Chicken egg?

Hello, first year raising chickens... or any animal for eggs. We started with ducks (around March 23rd) and followed with our first run of Chickens around 4/14/23. We also have a few younger runs... With that said... I kind of expected duck eggs a month or so ago but nothing... Then today This...

    Cockerel stomping vs pecking

I have a established (young) flock. It has one cockerel and we have 9 even younger chicks (6 weeks) that we keep separated (in their private run). The main flock has free range, fully for a few acres. Anyways, it is set up so they can see each other (for future integration). It goes as expected...

    Somewhere, yet still nowhere

    (1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens? We (wife and I) are new to chickens, we have in the past mostly worked with ducks. (2) How many chickens do you have right now? 15, plus 5 ducks (live together, coop included as it has ground access (skirted) and a 7 foot tall...

    Silkie picking the wrong fights?

So I have about a 18 week old (hen) silkie mix breed (mixed with black austrolope). She is the only of her kind that we have (are hoping for a brooder). Anyways we have kept her separated from the chicks (she didn't hatch and they are only about 9? weeks old (silver wyndottes and barred rock)...
