Official BYC Poll: Do You Wear a Mask or Respirator When Cleaning Your Coop?

Hi Nifty Unfortunately, I no longer own chickens. I had to move away on short notice so they are now under the care of my ex. But yes, just as a precautionary measure, I'd wear an N-95 (?) (been awhile) while doing a deep clean.I just figured I don't need poop dust in my lungs, even though I...

    HELP Easter Egger wheezing

Thank you all for your help and replies. We returned her to the flock and the sound almost stopped shortly after. She is still doing it, but it is quieter and less often. While inside, we noticed the noise seemed less when she had her head down. It is definitely respiratory, and the sound is...

HELP - Sudden Onset of Strident Wheeze

Should also say she has been separated from the other chickids. She is able to eat, drink, poop (regular and cecal). We have since stopped the food though. We just wanted to see if she could eat. We also gave two eyedroppers of melted coconut oil, spaced approximately 30 minutes apart. She...

HELP - Sudden Onset of Strident Wheeze

5 month old hen fine this morning, eating and drinking fine, gave an egg this morning. Now she's making this horrible noise, see video. Doesn't seem to be distressed, still eating and drinking. Just this awful sound. Is there anything we can do to help her, and does anyone know what might...

We also got our every first egg today! Our chickids are 23 weeks old; 4 EE, 3 BO, 2 BA, 2 Dominiques. We thanked the EEs for the egg and for laying it in the nesting box 🥰 Agreed - what a journey. The anticipation, excitement, the fundamental enrichment these chickids bring to our lives...I just...

Countdown To Eggs! For June hatches 😊

Did you use supplemental lighting in the coop? I was told our July 5th hatches wouldn't start laying until the Spring unless we used supplemental lighting. I'm trying to find out if that is true or false. Thank you!

Countdown To Eggs! For June hatches 😊

Our chickids hatched July 5, making them 14 weeks old yesterday. We have EE, Black Australorps, BO and Dominiques. I heard that unless we use supplemental lighting, our girls won't lay any eggs until the Spring. Is that true?

Trib, By now your new blue-eyed son is 8, your daughter is pre-teen(?) and your wife likely even more beautiful. I just wanted to say I think it's nice that you trade off with your wife. Being a stay-at-home Mom/Wife is not an easy job. Cheers to you with my own cup of Folgers ☕ ~Ginger

    Chickens won't use Dust Bath

Thank you for asking this question! My 13 week old chickids will scratch and peck at the dust bath but won't use it. Mine is hardwood ash, construction sand and a tiny sprinkling of DE. I'll add a bag or two of potting soil. Thanks again!!!

EE with a few stumpy leg feathers

Thank you! Stubs are definitely a good definition of what they appear to be, though not like the ones in your picture. Babs has some that are about 1/4" long.

EE with a few stumpy leg feathers

I have 4 EE chickids who are 9 weeks old. One has just a few super-stumpy "feathers" on her legs. They look to be just the shaft, with no actual feathering. Any idea what this is, what it might mean, should I be concerned...? Thank you for your help. I love these girls so much! 🥰

    Is this abnormal feather development?

Done! Would a protein boost in the form of boiled egg yolk also help them?
