I have a hen that quit laying -which is fine- but she had pasty butt and I soaked her in warm water a week ago to clear it off… but she since then can’t raise her tail feathers. It’s so sad!
If she were egg bound all this time she’d be dead by now… I don’t know how to help her.
She gets...
They are not going to house together. The cats home base is in the garage, free to wander.
The chickens will have their coop and run, also free to roam.
If the cats want to clear the coop of mice, great!
I just want to make sure they get along. So the cats don’t see chickens as prey.
I’m about to move my hens closer to our house as well as bringing a cat or two for mousing. I’ll start the cats in our garage to establish home base.
Given the choice, would you establish the cats first or the hens first?
My hens aren’t really lap chickens… and the cats I’m getting from my...
We don’t know which hen is laying the soft eggs. Though we have our suspicions it’s the white one.We were watching them return to roost yesterday, and she stopped by a small pile of snow to munch. As she did so we saw a line of something (do chickens vomit?) string from her beak. It happened...
Ah. Sorry that s not filled out! I’m in SE South Dakota . One molted in the fall. That’s the one I suspect of soft eggs. They don’t get a lot of mealworm treats. The feed i described is what they eat freely.
We’ve recently discovered two soft eggs, two days in a row.
Last week we noticed an egg that looked like it had a hard time coming out.
We have three hens, they are exactly two years old. They’ve been laying through the winter 2 or 3 eggs a day total.
Feeding them layer feed, scratch grain...
Hello friends. We moved to an 18 acre hobby farm in the past year. I have three chickens (hens) for eggs.
We have noticed a few mice in the garage, and have been considering introducing a barn cat to manage that situation. However, in the summer we have tons of crickets ( I mean tons! ) and...
UPDATE: The Golden Girls seem to have caught on! The waterer is raised up on a concrete block and there is evidence of water dripping down onto the concrete, and the water level inside the tank is moving the right direction!
I did have to grab Rue mcClanahan again for some remedial education…...
I’ve had them since October. Changed the waterer before Christmas.
We will try keeping them in the coop. It’s cold and expected snow the next few days.
Hi all! I have taken on my sister in law’s hens as she went south for the winter. I’m in south east South Dakota where temps hover around freezing through daytime hours, below freezing over night and it will dip even colder, single digits and -0 before winter is over.
For that reason, I...
Thank you. This is what I was afraid of.
I know you can butcher them at any time, and that caponizing them is not necessary. I was just looking for ways to keep them alive.
I needed this perspective. I'll see about having them butchered.
I'm thinking I would take two of them for meat. The...
Looking for advice and shared experience. I need to combine three young roosters with three laying hens.
A little background: I raised three chicks that I got from a guy on FBMarketplace. All three turned out to be roosters. Sigh. They will reach 20 weeks at Thanksgiving.
I recently took my...
Hello. I'm new to chickens - raised them with mom when I was a kid but that was a LONG time ago.
Just yesterday and today I noticed a couple soft poops. Color and consistency of soft milk chocolate. No way to know which of three chickens. They are about 9 weeks old currently. They are on...
Debbie,
Are silkies a bit mentally challenged? Or stubborn? Dotty ran up the ramp on her own after refusing to be caught. Three cheers! So far I've thought of her as the leader, so let's hope.
I grabbed a little USB chargeable light and propped it up inside. yay.
I will try the meal worm/...
