When does a California White start laying?

Sometimes they don't start laying right at the specified age. I had some ISA's that started right at 16 and others from the same batch waited til 22 weeks. Like people, some mature faster than others. Be patient...the eggs will come!

    Slow starter?

I have a new hen to my flock (she is a solo newbie as she was only survivor) She is a cross of ISA Brown (hen) and AmericanaX (rooster) and is now 22 weeks old +/-. Still hasn't developed her comb and no signs of starting to lay. Either her genetics are really confused or wants to be a...

    Little miss independence

I have a new hen in my flock (only survivor of a hatching) she hasn't started laying yet and when I let the flock free range she doesn't stay with the group and often wanders into the woods/swamp and gets lost. Is there any way to teach/encourage her to stay with the flock? She has been with...

    Single hen not accepted

Thanks, I will have to find ways to implement some of these practices as I cannot let them free range without supervision due to high coyote population in our area and 30+ acres of woods/brush. I dont have any means of re-situating birds away from the coop...not without building another complete...

    Single hen not accepted

Hello everyone. My neighbor offered to have 1 of her hens set some eggs for me this spring. Of the 4 I gave her, only 2 hatched and 1 is a rooster (and has been rehomed). So I am left with a single adolescent hen that looks nothing like the others (dad is a mixed breed) and she is being attacked...

My roosters injured a hawk what do I do?

I would call a rescue or your states department on wildlife. If nothing else they will be able to humanely euthanize the hawk. You can throw a towel over it and put it in a box in the mean time. If they can rehab it...hopefully it will have learned its lesson...just because they are called...

Anyone have any good tips and tricks that are Cheap and easy to boost protein and nutrition for chickens?

I make homemade Greek yogurt and while I usually use the left over whey to make bread, I sometimes put some in a small bowl and feed to my chickens. They get crazy when they see me coming with the bowl! Whey is a good source of protein and nutrients plus probiotics.

    Hey y'all

This is my first time raising chickens, but not my husband's and if he had his way...we still wouldn't have chickens! We have 5 ISA hens and an ISA/Ameraucana X rooster named Wilbur. He showed up in our coop one day...don't know who put him there😉. Recently retired and moved to Tennessee and...

    Feeding Whey

I use my yogurt whey in place of water when I make bread. I don't have any "bad smell" when baking and everyone is always asking what makes my bread so delicious. I freeze my whey until I'm ready to bake, but if I have too much I take a small bowl out to my chickens...they love it.
