How many roosters to start with?

You are absolutely right, I as well as my kiddos enjoy having chickens and plan to have them for years. When I first got them, I didn't realize how attached we would be to them.

How many roosters to start with?

Honestly, noise from a rooster really isn't a concern for me, I actually like a roosters crow and I doubt my neighbors would mind much. The biggest reason I haven't added a rooster to my flock is because of my concerns of aggression, I have kids and they are very involved with the chicks daily...

Leghorn or California white? Or maybe something else?

Do you have a recent picture of her? I could be wrong, but I don't think Amber links have black spots, I thought they were white with amber/orange coloration like the one in the picture you posted. California whites are supposed to have black spots. Smokey pearls is another that is white/off...

Leghorn or California white? Or maybe something else?

I'm still not 100% sure what my chick is, still either a leghorn or California white. Going by her personality and how calm she is, I'd say a California white. Regardless what she is, she is absolutely one of my favorites out of all of my chickens, if I ever figure out 100% what she is, I would...

How many roosters to start with?

I ended up not getting any rooster and am undecided if I will get one. I would have loved to have went with all barred rocks, but my kiddos had other breeds they were also wanting. I am hoping in a couple years to build a second coop and run with only barred rocks, but I'm wanting to get the...

How many roosters to start with?

I ended up not getting a rooster at all. I was originally wanting to eventually hatch some chicks but decided that if I wanted to get more chicks I'll just wait for one of mine to go broody and just buy a few chicks to put under her. So far my chicks (pullets) are doing just fine without a...

5 week old chicks growing drastically different from each other.

I wouldn't worry to much, based on your pictures it doesn't look like there is really that major of a difference. I have 2 buff orpingtons, 1 was always bigger then the other, feathered out better and all that. Now at almost 9 weeks I can almost barely tell them apart, they are now feathered out...

    My First Flock!

I don't have alot of advice since I'm still new to all of this, my chicks are 6 weeks, 5 weeks and 4 weeks old. I have the following chicks 2 Buff Orpingtons 2 Isa Browns (red sex links) 1 speckled sussex 1 silver laced Wyandotte 1 California white (supposed to be but still not 100% sure...

Is this really a Buff Orp?

I agree with everyone else, definitely not a BO. I just saw another post, I'm not sure if I can find it again but I think it was in the "general breed discussions", someone posted chicks that looked very similar to yours and a few people commented and said they looked like buff brahmas. It's...

Leghorn or California white? Or maybe something else?

I'm just going by what I have read, and posts I've seen here on BYC saying that all CW including chicks have atleast 1 black spot on them, and that it's rare for them to not have spots and if several don't have spots they were most likely mislabeled, that is literally the only reason I thought...

Leghorn or California white? Or maybe something else?

I'm not sure if personality is a good way to determine a breed, but my chick isn't flighty and skittish so far. She seems to be brave (compared to my other chicks), very curious and I'd even say a leader because she is always the first to check out new stuff and try it out. Whatever she is, I do...

Leghorn or California white? Or maybe something else?

She was supposed to be a California white, but everything I had read said they all have atleast a couple black spots on them and very rarely does 1 chick not have any spots at all, but none of the other chicks had spots either. I guess I didn't realize she was a bit husky for a leghorn...

Leghorn or California white? Or maybe something else?

I'm a week late, but here she is at 4 weeks. I'm pretty convinced that she is a Leghorn, but I could be wrong. I don't believe she's a Cornish cross though.

Chicks jumping on top of each other???

I think its normal, my chicks like to do that too, particularly my 3 week old chick, she likes to jump on the older chicks backs.

    Hen or Roo speckled Sussex

Cockerels definitely. I have a 5 week old speckled sussex and her comb isn't that big or red.

Do i keep my chicks on medicated or switch to non medicated

No, they have been brooded inside, and last weekend was the first time for them going outdoors.

Do i keep my chicks on medicated or switch to non medicated

I have chicks of different ages, 5 weeks, 4 weeks and 3 weeks. They are just about through their bag of medicated chick starter, so will be buying another bag soon. I'm unsure if I should keep them on medicated or switch to unmedicated. Also, should I keep them on chick starter, or should I...

Different aged chicks, when to put them outside?

The youngest is 2 weeks, oldest is 4 weeks. I have a little area set up for when I do bring them outside. It'll be while we are outside doing yard work so that I can keep a close eye on them, I'm not sure if I trust leaving them outside unsupervised just yet.

Different aged chicks, when to put them outside?

No, no unusual feathering. They are buff orpington, speckled sussex, isa brown, wyandotte, one I'm unsure what she really is but I'm certain she is leghorn (she's the 3 week old that is feathered out almost as well as the 4 week olds), and the youngest is a onyx pearl. I've been wanting to...

Different aged chicks, when to put them outside?

I'm not planning to put them outside right now, not for atleast a couple more weeks. They have all been together since the day I brought them all home.
