    The Broody Jail

Thank you! I added another layer under her feet and left her in 3 days/nights. She was cured! Now I have 2 new ones in there together, is that OK? They have been broody together for over a week in the coop.

    The Broody Jail

It is just slats but she has the piece of wood that she primarily stands on. I could add another layer of metal grid if needed? She seems to maneuver OK. Making sure she has water and food at all times. She slept out there last night, it is safe for her to do that here. We are going to do...

    The Broody Jail

Hi All, Here is our setup for Broody Jail. She has been broody for over a month and I was so busy with other stuff I just let her do it but now really need/want her to come back to the other side. Does this look OK?

    Natural breeding thread

Here is our update: Mom & chick are doing good, although mom still sits alot as if there is an egg she is sitting on. Is that normal? The two of them go out for a quick snack and drink and then typically go back to their box to sit/sleep. They are in their own enclosure still but Rooster dad...

Thanks for everyone's support. Mama & chick are doing great, they are in their own space and seemingly very good. There is still an egg from 4/22 under the other broody, I let her keep it versus give back to mom #1. Not sure how that one will go but the first one is good and things seem...

How long should a broody hen sit after eggs start hatching?

Thanks for this info! I am worried b/c my new mom hen is still sitting but it hasn't even been 24 hours.

Thanks! Any advice on my recent post I just wrote would be hugely helpful. And thanks for all the other advice. Just found another post that says 48 hours of sitting after hatching is normal. So I am trying to just let this all be!

Thanks! Trying not to be overly obsessive here but a few questions for a first timer to this 1. Is it normal for the mom to still be sitting as if she is sitting on an egg still? She really hasn't gotten up much to move around. I put the food near her so she can eat but even when I don't she...

one is bantam, she's the current mom, and then there's a younger bigger hen, a black sex link i think is her breed. the bantam gets a little bullied when she is just in the regular mix of things but i think has established herself now and is older than the others

Ok, having Mama #2, once the chick is hatched, would she also go in our baby enclosure area, and the two moms would be together in there with their 2 babies? We have 9 other hens and 1 rooster that's what our set up is.

Ok. I might just put it back under original mom then. She is mostly just roosting with her tiny chick under her. They have not gotten up much to walk around yet. Going to get the little water dish and chicken starter now. Should I be offering the mom special food in addition, she's been...

Thank you! Moved the mom and chick to their own space outside with an enclosed box. Lots of straw. Going to get chick starter now and ample water dishes. Broody hen still in coop with 4/22 egg, I gave it to her. You recommend not doing that? I was thinking we'd let her hatch it and then...

    Natural breeding thread

Well we have our first chick hatched yesterday! There is still an egg there labeled 4/22 so it'll be a few more days to hatch, this one was laid a few days earlier. I won't make that mistake again. Questions: She is still in the coop on the floor in her special spot with the chick and sitting...

She's in her favorite nest box. Sadly we just found a dead chick halfway hatched underneath her. Not sure what exactly happened. The other two eggs are still intact and not hatched.

I am doing this with my bantam silkie, she is sitting on 3 eggs since 4/19 and I think that means we are very close to hatch date! I have her in the same coop as everyone else for now. Should I move her into an enclosed area outside with a small cat carrier full of straw and open door to the...

5 yo hen walking like Frankenstein with her feet turned in

She was euthanized today by our wonderful vet Dr Welch. It was pain-free and she was so tired and ready for this ordeal to be over. I will miss her but am relieved, things were not going well. Now I know more about this in old hens and hope everyone else going through this has as humane ways...

5 yo hen walking like Frankenstein with her feet turned in

Update: she is very sick. Vet gave her antibiotics and pain killers but they are not helping. We are home now and I am trying to figure out best way to euthanize. So sad.
