I don't have a heater at all at the moment. I have, but it's this https://a.co/d/bGyJMrt
Overheating is definitely my biggest worry. They have been spread out every time I saw them, but i came home at lunch and added a second roof to the brooder too keep more rain and sun off (heat hits it...
Last time I had the chicks in my living room. Never again!
This time I had the idea to put them in a 2x4 foot, 2 foot tall plywood box outside. Fully enclosed and ready to go.
Now I have them, I realize that im worried not about heat (I have a heat lamp), but about OVERHEATING them. It's...
January!? What kind of idiot chicken thinks 20⁰ weather is a good time to molt!? LOL
I didn't end up getting the Wyandottes this year, but I might next time. They do sound like great birds!
I haven't got any of the new ones yet. I may have posted some of the original 4 here, but idk.
You are being helpful. The quail or muscovies might be an option someday, but I'm building a coop and just ordered 6 chicks, so it's too late to change for this year.
My experience with ducks is...
Oh I can have chickens fine. I'm legally limited to only a few, but the rooster is the annoying law. That would save me a lot of money to be able to hatch my own chickens, let alone sell them (I know that's work and all, but im just saying).
Having been hit by a Shockwave once, I can understand why they don't try and fly over it LOL
I have seen armadillo, possums, and cats and one dog. I'm sure there are raccoons as well.
I've seen a few hawks, but none have ever messed with any of the birds, or even done a second flyby...
Ah, that makes sense.
I don't have any fence yet, but I was thinking of getting either 4ft chicken wire or premier one shock fence. The chicken wire is way cheaper, but idk if that would keep them in or not. Probably not... the premeir one probably would.
Thanks! yeah, the feathered feet thing is definitely not good if they're wet at all. If they're dry, it might help, but my yard is wet, so it wouldn't go well.
Definitely sounds like the rooster isnt an option. Sad, because it would be amazing to get to breed them.
All of that, EXCEPT flying seems like a good thing. But I suppose I can trim their wings (feathers only, I think right?) if/when I get a fence and let them free range.
I got bit by the chick bug again...
I'm probably buying some chicks in the next week. I have 2 hens, but want to add 6 more (and a rooster if there is a quiet one).
I have a Black Australorp and a Rhode Island Red, so I would like to get other egg colors, and breeds. I like the BAs for the...
Yeah, whoever said that doesn't really think very hard about the logic of what they say. (Not you OP)
The breeders handle them. How does rhis person think they end up in a box and then end up in your brooder?
Also, as others have said, not only is it completely fine to handle them, but you...
I understand that, but i can't help that I don't have the liquid assets (or any other kind LOL) to get a nice feeder.
Literally anything will be better than my current feeding system (dumping the feed on the coop floor).
I didn't want to try a bucket type because I thought it would end up getting chewed through or something, but I guess i can cross that bridge if it ever actually comes up.
I actually have a bag of sunflower seeds they love, but it's just attracted more LOL.
My coop is portable, so they can get under it easily. They can and do get in there, but other than startling the hens, they don't seem to do any physical harm. I am worried about disease and the like though...
I've seen Al's feeders, and Grandpa's feeders. That is really a lot of money for me at the moment.
Is there a DIY option that would be cheaper? $50 would be best.
