Cracked beak with blood caked underneath

I didn't take any pics of after the broken piece fell off, but this is her now. The tip is the slowest part to grow back. I haven't put anything on it in over 2 weeks. So grateful that animals are such fighters. 🙏

Cracked beak with blood caked underneath

An update for anyone who may be in a similar situation: It's now been 2 full weeks since her injury. The broken part of the beak fell off at about 1.5 weeks. It looked pretty bad before it fell off - black due to dirt and old blood. The new portion is growing back but slowly. She can only eat...

Cracked beak with blood caked underneath

Thank you. Would you recommend a vet visit? The closest one is 30 minutes away and I can't be seen until Thursday (today is Monday). She is eating, drinking, acting completely normal. She is able to close her beak a bit more than when I first discovered her injury so I do think she is improving...

What about a small amount of crushed ibuprofen for pain? I'm sure she's in pain but she is acting completely normal

Thanks for the resources. Thankfully she is able to eat mash and scrambled eggs. Saving these links in case it gets worse. 🙏

Cracked beak with blood caked underneath

Thanks, I did see that article when I was first googling. Due to the amount of blood under the beak I do not want to super glue because I don't want to trap in any dirt. I've called about 6 vets so far and can't get any help within the next few days. So crazy!!

Cracked beak with blood caked underneath

Thank you for your care and advice! When your chick broke her beak, what did you do? Just monitor and hand feed?

Cracked beak with blood caked underneath

Also, it looks like the bleeding is where her beak meets her comb and it's dripping down her beak.

Cracked beak with blood caked underneath

Thanks so much. I added a photo of the other side. I see her trying to drink* but every time I come outside she runs up to me. I just fed her a scrambled egg and she struggled but did eat it. It looks like it's bleeding again up by her nostrils. *She is drinking but I'm not sure how much water...

Cracked beak with blood caked underneath

My poor girl somehow injured her beak. I tried cleaning it this morning but the blood is caked under her broken beak. I sprayed vetricyn on it. She laid an egg this morning, is preening herself now, and generally is acting okay. She can't eat hard pellets or mealworms but she can eat mushy...

How long to give chicken a chance?

She was not loud before the hawk encounter, and her previous caretaker said she was quiet as well. My thought is that she learned that squawking = me coming outside because she quiets down when I come out and stays quiet as long as I'm outside, so maybe she will associate the...

How long to give chicken a chance?

She was squawking like crazy again this morning so I put her in a crate in my garage. Hoping to train that squawking = time out. Maybe that will help?

How long to give chicken a chance?

Rehabbed a chicken with a severe case of scaley leg mites this winter, and she's been integrated with my two EEs for about 2 months. She has become head hen. All has been fine until a week and a half ago when a hawk landed in my yard. She got my attention by squawking and I was able to scare off...

Scalex spray for scaly leg mites

This is after two days of oil dipping and slathering on Vaseline. How bad do the SLM look?

Scalex spray for scaly leg mites

Ahh, good to know. I've never seen mention of doing the oil AND ivermectin so I will keep that in mind going forward. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. This has been extremely helpful!

Scalex spray for scaly leg mites

Thanks for the response and encouragement! Neem oil is a good idea. Have you tried this method before? Do you have any experience with the Scalex spray? I'm having a hard time finding if it's safe for chickens in this way since it's marketed towards other birds. Here's to hoping the Vaseline...

Scalex spray for scaly leg mites

I couldn't find much info online so hoping someone here has experience! I rescued a hen with a pretty bad case of scaly leg mites. The owner said she's had them for the entirety of the time she had the bird. Apparently they treated once with Vaseline and it didn't take care of the problem. It...
