Unfortunately, we did have to buy it. I looked online for second hand ones first, but they were either not the right thing, or way too far away (we don't have a trailer or anything to transport one in), or the advertisement looked dubious in some way. I had also read that there was a scamming...
Of course!
I don’t know how to do a running post that you keep adding to, I guess like a blog… I’ll look into it, then I can chip away at adding pics to what we’re up to in our lil chicken world! The coop (we call it a shoop as it’s really a shed!) is nearly all finished too. 💕 the weather...
I've finally had time to check out your hatch-along thread! I'm still going for liquorice for a black or dark chick please! 😀 your past chicks were so gorgeous!! Can't wait for mine to hatch 💕💕
How about liquorice?! My daughter is hoping she gets a black hen araucana to call liquorice! We love that name 💕😋
I will definitely follow your hatch along! And I love the sweets theme!!
I also love the araucanas, they're meant to be friendly too - let's hope ours got that memo!!! :fl
Thank you 😃
I chose Cream Legbar, so have 4 of those. My eldest daughter chose Araucana, so she has 2x lavender and 2x black. My youngest daughter chose Cuckoo Maran, so she has 4 of those! Hopefully all will go well!
I’m impressed with my incubator so far. There is minor differences between...
Could it be that the fox damaged a nerve, so she doesn't have the same coordination as before? No idea, just a thought. Were there any puncture wounds? If so - are they healing/ infected etc?
Hoping she makes a full recovery, poor thing xx
Sorry to jump in, but hopefully this might help someone else, too :)
My incubator arrived this morning, so after washing / disinfecting and then drying it, I set it up with two shop-bought-eating eggs (to test the turn table). First of all, I did it 'dry' and let it be for an hour or so. It is...
I am no expert! But common sense would tell me the greenhouse might be a bit risky, as the temperature might fluctuate too much. Does it get really hot in there? We have a summer house (basically, a glorified shed!) which my husband uses as an office. It gets almost unbearably hot in there on...
Thanks for this. I watched the video you shared, and then watched these, which I also found interesting.
She suggests using the dry method if you live in a humid place (like I do!), and the shoelace method if you live somewhere more dry.
Hope these help. I am also going to be incubating...
Thank you for your insight! It's really helpful hearing the same themes come up from multiple members :)
The pecking order comment is a good point. Sounds like I need to do more homework as to which breeds will work together in a small flock (5 or so hens).:caf
That is a good point - one I had not considered! :thumbsup and I also like the idea of seeing the chicks develop; the children would really enjoy the experience/process (on the whole, I know it can be an emotional ride!) and hopefully getting them tamer as a result.
I get this! I do love all...
That's an interesting observation - and I can believe it. My dog loves a lot of other dog types - though not all (for example, she hates all Labradors). However, whenever we meet another dog of the same breed as her, she is definitely different with that dog. It's like she knows. So I can...
That is an interesting point. I have heard about buying in hatching eggs (as opposed to pullets) to minimise bringing in disease, but had not considered the diverse gene pool provided by a range of hens and suppliers. One more factor that I will bear in mind; thank you for raising it. Choosing...
That would be fun! And learning all about genes / genetics at the same time. I'm still undecided about having a cockerel atm, but would like to incubate some next year - either in a 'bator or under a broody.... too many exciting possibilities!!
Ah sorry, I got confused by his being drenched and covered in blood - I understand now than Junior must have caused this damage to the older rooster, not Junior being injured and dying!
I know rehoming the boys is part of dealing with flock management, along with getting new ones in to...
Thank you for your comprehensive reply. I wish I had as much space as you, but here in the U.K. you are very, very blessed if you have an outdoor space that big. My garden is considered pretty big for the majority of the U.K., and it is 120ft x 40ft. The girls will be kept in a predator proof...
