So, this is new to me in creating a thread. Crap, I don't even know what a thread is! But haven't been on BYC for years since I built our first 2 coops 5+ years ago. However I do appreciate the 40,000 plus view and many of the sweet comments made about my original posts of my coop design photos...
Hi, and welcome to BYC. As far as a rooster.....no, no, and no ya don't need a rooster for hen to lay eggs. If ya gonna want fertile eggs for hatching, then yes. The only positive about having rooster in with hens is protection and early warning from bad guys if your girls won't be totally...
Hi, Here is how I did my runs.
I used 6' x 10' construction fencing sections set in wooden framework. Used chain link fencing over 2" x 6" framing for roof. Works well.

Hi, Have two coops and both with add-a-motor controlled doors made from 1/8" aluminum. Both work great and do indeed go down slowly. My chickens area always in long befor the doors close. You can add solar option, mine are on timer plugged into 110v outlet. Havn't had a power outtage issue yet...
Hi, Sorry for the delayed response to your question, been out of town. Yes, the track for the door is 3/4" x 3/4" aluminum angle. Two pieces for each side, with space left between for the 1/8" aluminum door to slide in. very simple and works great. Just keep everything nice and plumb and...
Hi, Wow...my wife and I were just talking about all the effort I went to ...to provide plenty of nest boxes for our girls when designing our coops. First coop, pretty good size. 10' x 12', walk in.... houses around 30 girls. Built 4 very large , outside access nest boxes....the wenches use 2...
Hi, thanks for feedback. Sorry if I gave wrong impression. We feed our girls well. Layer pellets, BOSS, greens from table, etc....Feed store lady thinks we are crazy for spending so much money on our "Chickens", but ....we love 'em and want them happy and healthy. Bread is minimal as a treat...
Hi, Thans to all the recent "looks" and nice replys. As far as coop placement and direction I really think there is no definitive answer. It depends on your climate. Wind direction, rising and setting sun on your land and if it truely rises in the east, sets in west(not always the case), type of...
Hi, Just thought I'd share this. Started buying day old and two day old bread from local outlet. Got a "HUGE' trash bag of bread, rolls, etc... from New Orleans bakery for $5.00, like 40-45 loaves. goats and chickens can't get enough. Seems to us, a great way to supplement feed and.... as a...
Hi, Here is our bantam coop which is home to silkies, frizzles, polish and other small birds. All of my construction photos can be seen on my page or search Bantam Bungalow. good luck with yours,
Erik
Thanks, I'll try all of this. I know after reading alot of posts that this change was needed.....just think for some of us that are alittle computer challenged that things could have been set up easier and more like original BYC along with all the new stuff. Thanks again,
