Give the wounds a wash with saline - that means a cup of lukewarm water with a teaspoon of salt added and dissolved in it. Bathe the wounds gently with that - that will help to flush out any dirt and saliva. The salt helps kill any bacteria. Dry the wounds and apply some kind of antiseptic...
Really sorry to hear that, LissyB. I hope that sometime in the future you're able to get an incubator that you have more faith in and then hatch some lovely ducklings for yourself.
Normally it's not something I'd suggest, partly because of the reason. I'd never do it myself as i never help unless the duckling has pipped the shell itself already. But I suggested it in this case because, very sadly, I think this little duckling has probably already passed. At close to 33...
I don't think the egg size would matter.
If you see no progress tomorrow then I would enlarge the hole in the shell and very carefully tear a little hole in the inner membrane.
If you are absolutely sure that it's Day 32 then, yes, I'd make a little hole in the air cell and enlarge it a bit with tweezers. Stop if you see any bright red blood. If you see no blood you can keep going. Do it in a steamy bathroom.
You can use a little drill bit to make a hole (just twist...
I have three young birds who are leaving tomorrow to go to a new state (6 hour road trip by animal courier). So I kinda know how you feel. I feel sorry for them, because I know it'll be scary, and sorry for the two brothers who will be left behind, and who will be confused. But I know that they...
You'd be hoping to at least see some shadowy movement in the air cell, which is the duckling's head poking into the air cell. If you just see a solid line and nothing at all in the air cell then they probably means he has not broken into the air cell. 32 days is pretty late, unfortunately.
Let...
A bit of an odd one but that's not unusual for a young duck just starting to lay. It takes a little while for the system to co-ordinate itself so everything is working 100%. Things should settle down over the next week or two :)
When I read your comment about him (well, her!) flattening out, stretching out the neck and diving under you I immediately thought 'that's female behaviour'. Then I read further about the egg. And that's also definitely female behaviour!! The flattening out is female flirting...she is inviting...
No, I'm afraid that that is not a Welsh Harlequin drake. But your comment made me think that he (or she) might be something like a Blue Campbell (which, like Welsh Harlqeuins, have the dusky gene, but blue as well. Welshies are different to Campbells though in that as well as dusky Welshies are...
Yes, I completely agree with CelticOaksFarm. That is bad bumblefoot that has become very infected. A course of antibiotic injections from the vet is probably going to be necessary, and possibly some minor surgery as well. I'd say that that bird is well beyond successful home treatment...
Is there any chance of a picture taken outdoors, in better light? It's just a bit hard to see his plumage in that pic :) He does look like he is blue in colour (for the most part anyway). It is unusual to get a mostly blue duck without a bib. He also has wing bars (the white stripe on his wing)...
I keep my ducks' water at last 1.5 yards from the food - otherwise they make it wet. What they like to do is get a mouthful of food, then take a drink of water to wash it down, then another mouthful of food. When they take that second mouthful the water from their bill dribbles into the food...
Angel wing for sure. Chixaddict has given good advice. I'd say that it's unlikely that wrapping will help because your duck is a bit older, but it is still worth a try.
If it doesn't work I'd trim the wing feathers too - cut the feathers off close to the base (just leaving bits of the feather...
LOL, yes, you are lucky that they are laying in it. I built my ducks an insulated house and they only go in it to lay or if it's hailing. Everything else - they are outside. :)
LOL, those are great names. I hope that you have Captain and PJ's little baby running round in a few days and that he has as much character as his parents :)
Excellent. That is a great book.
Your avatar is so cute. What a gorgeous photo :) I did think they looked a bit light coloured for Khaki ducklings (which are generally much browner) :)
The duckling in my avatar is a Blue Swedish. He's now a big drake and I just put some of his girlfriend's...
