    3 week old baby chick

We've raised one alone once and when she was a bit older she fit right back into the flock. I wouldn't worry too much!

    Our new peeps

Just received an order from Murray McMurray to supplement our flock, especially our Araucanas (looking to get a few blue egg layers) and adding a few other desired breeds (Buff Orp, White Giant, Delaware and Barred Rock). As always, very healthy chicks!

BY week three 80-85 degrees. Week 4 75-80. Another week and you can probably get away with losing it.

Is WAZINE 17% piperazine any good for deworming chickens?

Food grade diatomaceous earth (shell flour) is a great wormer and is handy for sprinkling in the coop to keep it dry and bug-free. Add a bit to their food from time to time. Make sure the DE is food grade though and not the stuff used in pool filters.

Poor thing. I consider heating lamps to be more of a yellow light than red, even though the bulb itself is red. Try adding a regular red buld to light the area. Or you'll probably just be forced to separate it. Good luck!

    My new babies!

Nice! Peeps are great! We've got a few ourselves. What have you got there. Looks like Barred Rocks, easter eggers and white giants???? Good luck!

I've heard that a red light in the brooder will diminish this. Make it harder for other chicks to see it.

Keeping woodland predators out of the chicken run??? Please advise

Hardware cloth is great! Fasten it with screws and big fat broad washers in the corners for extra security! I've never had a hardware cloth breach.

chicks with diarreah, should I be worried?

From what you describe they are most likely fine. Loose poo is fairly normal for chicks.

Getting chickens in coop at night

The only way I know to train chickens to consider a coop home is to close them in it for 2-3 days. Feed and water them inside the coop during this period (although I wouldn't do that afterwards- attracts predators). After that they will always return before dark.

Broody hen hatch in the main coop- Advice, tips?

We let our broodies stay in the main coop. When she hatches, move her to the floor in the corner of the coop so you can put out feed and water. She'll protect them and won't leave them once hatched. I would advise marking the eggs you want her to hatch as chickens are notorious for...

What's the record for the largest chicken egg? We've got a candidate!

I'm worried about the gal who laid it. It could be a triple or quad yolker! I'll update when we crack it open!

Wow, just wow! We've kept chickens for almost 10 years and have never had something this monstrous!

Comment by 'bluey' in article 'Our Coop Construction Churk Central'

Thanks! I would highly recommend pallet usage for those with limited building skills (such as myself). The Sikkens stain is very expensive (~$50 gallon?) but it lasts a long time. Thanks for the comments!

Please Respond - Chickens not laying yet

I'd add that you should consider restricting their treats as well (pasta, veggies and scratch). It could be more of a function of the birds not getting enough protein in their diet. Layers need 16-18% protein and scratch only offers half that percentage while the other treats offer none. Good...

    "Churk Central" finally complete!

A window certainly is a good suggestion and a future possibility. It certainly would be easy enough to frame out given the structure. I'm not worried too much about the light and breeze as the slats do have small gaps to allow both. I will probably add a window to the front for the afternoon...
