    Yawning in injured hen

My silkie hen sustained a couple pretty nasty, gaping, wounds on the back/side of her neck Friday due to an attack by our bantam roo (who she hatched btw - some gratitude ;P). She’s been separated, cleaned, treated with Veterycin & is eating/drinking, as well as, taking in electrolytes -...

Think these 2 look "girly" ??

My Speckled Sussex & Snowy Easter Egger are 8.5 weeks. The pinkish/red has just come in this week & I literally saw the wattles on the SS for the first time as I was taking her pic. Anyone see any reason to suspect my pullets might not be or can I lower my guard & relax about a possible sexing...

    Concerned about my Buckeye "pullet"

At 8 weeks old "her" tail still isn't developed well & this morning she started making unusual sounds. It doesn't sound like a crow - more like a squealing...like starting a car with a loose belt - so I'm not sure if it was a "practice" crow.?? Also, she was the smallest (I weighed them daily...

    New mixed flock feathering differences

We ordered 5 "female" chicks through a hatchery & are just over a week into brooding. One didn't survive the ship (). Now 3 of the surviving 4 (cream legbar, speckled Sussex & Easter Egger) are feathering almost exactly the same, while the 4th (buckeye) is feathering but is distinctly behind...

    No gift party for preschooler

We were invited to a 4 year olds birthday party & the parents have request "no gifts, please". So.... do we show up with nothing or do you think cards, balloons, etc are ok? What about gift cards?? (They are friends of our family & I know they don't like clutter & are particular with the toys...

    Hens laying under roosting bars

Everything has been cleaned and freshened. The only thing different in the coop from last season is a the largish free standing feeder was replaced with a PVC wall hanging feeder - making the nest boxes a bit more exposed. So I think the new location feels a bit more private ..??

    Hens laying under roosting bars

Our hens started laying again after taking the winter off but have been ignoring their nests in favor or another corner of the coop. I'm curious if those of you who have been in similar situations try to persuade them back to the nest box or just move the boxes to where they are laying? It...

    Freeloading streak ended ..

Our egg drought has finally ended! Found this beauty this morning after 3+ months of nothing (not in the nest box, btw, must have forgot how to use it ). To be fair there are only 2 girls left in our small suburban flock & they are 3 & 6 years old. It's probably a coincidence but this egg...

    Chickens sunbathing?

We had a day like that here in Western NY too! Threw open the coop door & windows & got a good cleaning in. Thought my girls would be out laying in the sun but the nosy biddys went out for about 15 minutes then headed back in, as if to supervise me & what I was doing to "their stuff"

Hen protecting other adult hens like a chick

Will adult hens protect other adults like they would their own chicks or am I reading the behavior wrong ...? This afternoon 2 hens hung out in the coop while I was cleaning & when I brought in the new pine shaving (they hate the bag) Luna (6 y/o Australorp) seemed to gather & hide our...

When do the chicks live out side?

Quote: Agreed! We are in the Buffalo, NY area and our 4 girls went out 2 days ago (bc that's when our coop was finished not bc of the weather) and today they are 10 weeks. I didn't think I had allergies but the dust/dander was getting to be unbearable on my eyes and sinuses and I...
