Any suggestions I can try specifically for guinea eggs? I've read the suggestions for chicken eggs, and will try those, but wondered if anyone knew anything else I could try since guinea egg shells themselves are WAY harder than regular chicken eggs. Thanks!
Why would over half of my 4 month old guineas suddenly decide to settle down for the night in the wood chips on the floor of their coop, after several months of them all happily perching side-by-side on the two highest of the three roosts that are in the coop? The three roosts are not close...
From what I've learned on BYC, it will take way longer than a week's confinement for the guineas to learn where 'home' is, especially if you get them when they are full grown. But, even if you get them as babies, you don't want to let them out that soon either, as they will run off and not come...
So, having the feeder inside the coop is okay? Or should it be out in the pen? (I'd 'like' for it to be inside the coop, to help convince them to come in at night to eat.....LOL.....that's when I've been filling the feeder, too) I kinda was hoping mine would take to the pellets next. I just...
The food is in a hanging feeder just above their shoulder level, so they can't reach the food with their feet at all. They tend to sling their heads sideways while eating and scatter the food across each other's backs, and also the floor/woodchips. They are not free-ranging yet, so I thought...
I must not be doing something right! I understood that deep litter with regular turning would settle the poop underneath and keep the top layer pretty dry and clean. Yes, I do see that. BUT..... I also see TONS of their crumbles (hanging feeder, were on starter, now on layer) at the very...
My guineas are almost 12 weeks old, have been out in their coop and pen since they were almost 3 weeks old. This past week I started letting 2 - 3 out of the pen each day to investigate for an hour or so. I was always close by, somewhere in the yard. Today I let 4 out and noticed a hawk...
Yes, spoiled they ARE!
They were 8 1/2 weeks old in the video posted above. The second picture I posted (of them in their coop for the first time) was at 2 weeks and 2 days old, about the same age as yours are now. I had THOUGHT they might be able to stay in the brooder until they were 3...
I have learned SO much information about guineas from you on here, Peeps, that I'd do that in a heartbeat IFFFF we didn't happen to live on opposite coasts of the US! That 'commute' would be a 'killer'. LOL
Thanks! I'm such a procrastinator that it probably wouldn't be painted yet either if I hadn't painted each piece before it was hammered or screwed in place! Turns out that it was actually easier to do it that way.....glad I saw that suggestion on someone else's coop building page!
I hadn't realized until yesterday that I hadn't posted on here in FOREVER it seems, so thought I'd kinda update the last month or so:
Here's our coop completed except for the final rock and cement pavers we'll add for more security (and decoration) around the wire skirting of the pen and...
"square dancing" Now I can't wait until mine get old enough to dance and also enter those 'Guinea Olympics' long distance marathons! I knew they were going to be a hoot to watch! This just adds something new to my amusement list! Thanks, Peeps, you are a never-ending fountain of info!
