Ok, so you want me to report "red hocks", my apologies, ok...I've never seen one before, are the hocks still red when they are dead after being piled upon?
Lolz, Sally, no, I'm not going to do any of that...that's looking for ghosts, why would you take the time to suggest that to me. My settings have been mostly successful, what were you thinking as you put that treatise together?
Ok, look at the egg in the bottom left corner, 3 eggs up, 1 egg in...its "Pink", for lack of a better term. I've never seen an egg that color, have you?
FWIW, I did a "dry" incubation, starting at 35%. The first day I lost 26.9% more weight than I wanted to. It was very difficult to recover, and the setting wandered all over the place as small changes to RH had much bigger impact.
Ok, so you have asked me a few questions I have no answer for.
Why would I check chick hocks after hatch? I count chicks that die within 3 days of hatch as "late deaths". If you'd like me to report splays, I can do that.
I am incubating Gen 1 crosses with their fathers, so no "pure" red...
Well, sorry, but the pip is happening right through your marking...so if 2 eggs hatch, you won't know which 2...maybe its just my anal way of keeping track of 100 eggs in the bator.
No, Sally, I have been having issues with the editor for a couple of months now. I can no longer use IE 11, and can only do edits/quotes in Microsoft Edge.
Lolz, a well thought out informational post, why hide?
FWIW, Sally, I weigh. I don't draw air sacs. So, as a testimony to weighing as a method of hatching, you can follow my settings (I am setting 100 eggs every 24 days this year). Setting #1 had 15 deaths (early and late) out of 66 viable...
I lost a 60 week old BCM just a couple of weeks ago to hen pecking. He had gotten a little frost bite in his comb and they pecked it to death. Iodine is the key, not only does it promote healing, its also distasteful to the hens who want to peck.
I would suggest you take some sandpaper to the...

Ok, could someone help me understand this quote. I know you didn't say it Jessimom, but someone did, and I don't see how its entirely correct. I agree, eggs should lose 13-14% of their weight over the 21 days. Its the "every egg" part I have issue with.
How do you adjust the humidity...
Wow, Sally, I am impressed. Yes, I took 83 into lockdown yesterday. The recent ridiculously below freezing spell has put a huge dent in my layers production, so my next setting (2/23) will have more older eggs (e.g. up to 15 days old). Practically every egg laid over the past 5 days has been...
None taken. Now please don't take offense, but you're all about the laugh, and I try to be about the facts. So, we can both do our thing here, cause its fun...
Excessive candling could lead to excessive egg breaking, but it doesn't have to, and it might lead to excessive understanding of how eggs develop, so, I say, if you don't drop them, go ahead and candle to your heart's content. Just make sure that eggs are never out of the bator for more than 30...
Not sure what bad habit you figure I am encouraging, but I weigh entire trays of eggs every day to make sure the RH% is doing its desired job. Takes less than 5 minutes, so no worse than a broody walking to poop. I must have missed something.
