I have no laying hens right now, just starting with chickens. 2 Rouen Hens, 1 drake and 5-9 week old chicken hen's with 1 rooster.
Plan to have 10+ Chicken hen's then my ducks. Feed is around $30 a month right now.
I wish I had set more, I have people upon people wanting chicks in my area. I had one guy wanting 25+ birds and 3 others wanting 10+ birds. I told hubby between eggs and chicks I could put a great dent in feed bills!
Wade (DH) wants to keep one that I'm pretty sure is a roo but he never attaches to any chicks so this one will be kept. He has been snuggling with this chick over the last 2 days. Already named it Obi One...
@Sally Sunshine
Not exactly sure what it is. But guessing EE. It looks just like my little one that didn't make it after the last hatch so I'm keeping this one!
Holy Cow, the last 3 days have been crazy!
So this hatch is complete and I ended with an 82.7% hatch rate based on what went into lockdown and 72% for overall set!
Here is the fluff outcome!

Not sure what They all are (buffs were really easy to pick out) but all but 4...
Hadn't thought about covering it before but my last hatch didn't have an issue. I'll cover it after this one.
I grabbed it out, put NEO on, removed sponge and put back in to dry in a cup.
@Sally Sunshine
They can't even walk yet so I'm guessing wasn't out of the egg more than 15-20 min. Other chick in there just hatched so I will leave it in for a bit to finish drying. Or should I grab it out and put the NEO on it?
Newly hatched chick question. I had one hatch while I was gone and noticed it was on top of the sponge right under the fan. Looks like it lost some of the skin and feathers off of the top of its head. What do I do?
@Sally Sunshine
They have dropped the forecasted amount thankfully! It was at 10 - 12 inches with 70 mile an hour wind, now we're looking at 5-8 in and 50+ mile an hour winds. The house is very stressful when we have to deal with snow. Long hours out plowing so this would be a good time for...
I put the eggs in lockdown this morning because I will be busy getting ready for the snow storm that is suppose to hit over night here, day 18 actually starts at 3 p.m. 29 eggs, which comprise of 6 Isa brown/Legbar mix, 9 EE/ Bresse mix, and 14 Buff Orp.
Fingers crossed
@Sally Sunshine
Any time I want to add more protein for my flock, I give them some eggs!!! They will love that for a treat. Just make sure they have grit and they will love you extra that day!
I candled, weighed, and drew air cells on my 33 today. With my weighing on day 4 to be sure how their weight loss was going, I found I was hugely ahead of where they should be trending so I upped the humidity. FLASH TO TODAY: Air cells are on the small side for day 8 even though my weigh...
Dang, I don't want to use heat out on the coop and our high today is in the 20's. I'm ready for them to be out. They did have a couple afternoons out there when it was in the 40's for extra exercise. I'd like them to get accustomed to lower temps before I make them go out full time.
Haven't had them outside because we've had highs the last 2 weeks in the 20's and lows in the negatives before wind chills. Once it gets about the 30's they will go out to the coop.
