Wow. I had a staggered hatch with only one egg scheduled to hatch so I decided to test not going into lock down... Temp was steady at 100.4 and humidity was 10% and the chick hatched just fine!
So I think I figured out what I had done wrong with my last hatch. It wasn't the thermometer/hygrometer because I got a new one and it was pretty close to matching my old one. After this most recent hatch #4, 10 out of 12 hatched a couple days ago and still waiting on 2... I think it was because...
Thanks! I'm not giving up. Already have 12+ eggs in there again. This is my third hatch only and this has been my worst hatch ever so actually I'm wondering if my thermometers/hygrometers are off. Anyone know any easy way to calibrate them?
I started with 10, 3 didnt develop and I tossed them by day 14, 3 hatched, and these 4 didn't. They were all moving around at day 18. Not sure what they died of. I cracked open the shell where the air sac was but did not open the membranes. I can see they were pretty much developed but something...
Lol thanks for the suggestion... I've actually tried that before, not trying to get her to go broody but only because a bear destroyed my Silkie coop so only place I could put her was in the brooder with 5 new chicks. She was nice to them but never went broody after I removed her and motherly...
Lol! That's why I originally got a couple Silkie girls but they won't go broody! I've even taken in broody hens from other ppl, but once they get here they won't go broody. Maybe it's because I free range them? Not sure. Probably should get another incubator but my husband probably would not...
Thanks Jessimom. I tap them and no chirping or responses. I candled them and possibly only one showed very slight movement... But could also just be my eyes. Guess I'll give them until tomorrow.
Hi everyone! Been a while... Needing help please... I have 4 hatching eggs that are 3 days late. I did the float test and they floated just by the air sacs but no movement. Are they goners?
Well my original plan was to put them in one of the smaller coops but seeing that the bear was able to break into the other one that had the silkies I didn't want to risk it... Even tho I'm sure the Bear is hibernating now.
I had to go build a makeshift pen in the coop for the 5 chicks I hatched before Halloween. They were getting too big for the makeshift brooder in my garage. Got all wet because I kept having to walk back and forth from the coop to the shop for tools... Lol! But hey, all the chickies survived...
