I had a solo chick for a week before I could get her friends. Get a hand mirror and put it against the wall of the brooder (down to the floor). It'll be their little friend until the others arrive.
If you act very early, you have a chance of fixing it (depending on how severe it is). Make a...
All done.
FINAL COUNT:
Originally set 8 Cream Legbar eggs from my own birds on March 5.
One clear/infertile, taken out day 10
Seven went into lockdown
Six hatched (two boys, four girls), one DIS. All chicks doing well (and being adorable). BEST EASTER EVER!!!!
Happy Easter, everyone...
Yeah, well, someone didn't tell my babies, who all hatched yesterday and overnight.
Of 7 eggs that went into lockdown, I have 6 babies in the brooder (2 boys, 4 girls - which is good, because that point of this hatch was getting girls from this hen). One egg is left, no external pip yet. I...
I had a large and small EcoGlow. The chicks didn't like them very much. Switched to Mama Heating Pad - wonderful happy chicks who snuggle treat it like their mother. Gave away the Ecoglows. Soooo, to each his/her own.
The hawks have REALLY been out today - they nest on my property, and I'm...
You guys are freaking me out with the early hatches - I am not ready for them to hatch yet! I keep whispering to them, "Wait, wait, go slow..."

You're telling me!!! I'm still trying to finish the brooder build after moving the other babies outside last weekend...
I'm almost 1000 posts behind, so I can't possibly catch up, but.... LOCKDOWN DAY!!!!
Weight loss is right on target for 18 days (11-13%), air cells look good in size...
Just did a quick Day 9 candle to double check that iffy one - this time it was obviously clear/not viable, so I went ahead and pulled it. Took a very quick look at the remaining 7 while I was out it (out of paranoia since I had left the turning cradle inadvertently unplugged for 30 hours on day...
Just did my day 7 candle. Of the 8 I set, 7 have good development, one is a possible clear or early quitter - but the eggs are dark blue/green, so it's hard to see. I put it back in the incubator and will check it again at 10 days before deciding whether to toss.

OMG, I'm brooding 20 right now (on their way outside soon, as soon as I get their growout tractor coops done). And I have another 20 coming plus 8 I'm hatching. I'm already overwhelmed - I don't see how you guys brood so many!!!!!!
OMG, you guys are so bad - I'm DETERMINED not to candle until day 7, but you're making it so hard!
:::putting fingers in ears, figuratively::::
I can't HEAR you! LaLaLaLaLaLaLaLaLaLaLaLaLaLaLaLaLaLaLaLaLa...

There's a HAL in April - set eggs any time in April:

Well, yes, if you were going to be there, you might choose to do something more specific based on wha the air cells look like. But if you're not, it's probably ok.
If they arrive broken, that's another story, because any intact ones with broken egg on them they would need to be carefully...
What do you mean by "a while"? Generally shipped eggs should sit at room temperature after they arrive for a day anyhow, so if you'll be back by then, that would probably be fine....
I always have hawks. Always (they nest in or near my yard). But there have been a lot more around in the past day or so - it's that time of year.
I have several different "family groups" and they have large fenced paddocks (which I rotate to allow the ground to recover). I stretch that...
