That's awful.
I'm so glad that your adult birds are okay. It is best to check the birds as soon as possible. If there are any burns, you don't need to put ointment unless the skin has broken. (Plain Neosporin WITHOUT analgesic) If blisters form, don't pop them. (separate so the others don't...
You Were the first source I ever learned incubation from! And the best source, your hatching guide I still have in a 3 ring binder in my hatching room. Ive even bought books and thought, nope, Sally's guide is better.
Do you Have a gas or wood stove? You can boil water and put it in mason jars with the lid on tightly, if they fit in the incubator, that will help keep it warm.
Oh my gosh that video!!! Me too, I've sent out eggs and watching that made me
Last year someone posted this one, which was also horrible to watch. my father worked for the USPS and can confirm this is pretty accurate.
If you post it on the EE sexing thread, those people are crazy good at being able to tell. I'm feeling like its a female based on the even coloring, but I'm no expert.
It depends a little on the rooster. A young one might not establish a high enough "rank" in the pecking order for quite some time, and the hens may reject him until then, especially if they are higher ranking. Once you see the rooster mount the hens then it only takes a couple of days for the...
You are so right! Just this morning, changed the water in my layer pen, several hens jumped out to eat grass chutes coming out of the slush. Around the corner, out of a pine tree comes the BIGGEST hawk I've ever seen. Usually, they don't seem to show up around here until April. I shooed everyone...
Hmmm... I can see the appeal in Cochins certainly. As weird as it sounds, leghorns are my all time favorite breed. They aren't rare or fancy at all, but they can be the bravest and most loyal companions, sleek and beautiful, and sometimes entirely skip molt and some will give you an egg every...
I got mine from BYC breeder YankeeBelle. I drove over to get the eggs, every single one hatched for me, and I kept the friendliest ones. The cock I kept is the sweetest, easiest rooster I've ever had. The hens are decent layers of a medium sized pink egg, and they seem to handle the cold pretty...
So sorry to hear that Nate!
I know you would prefer showgirls, so we'll see what pops up. There's lots of folks on the thread, including myself, who would be happy to help you.
If you can't find anything locally and still want to do the hatch a long, I would send you some EE or Faverolles...
That is one of the cutest chicks I have EVER seen! :love
13 out of 14 is about 93% hatch rate, that's fantastic! I'm still working on improving my roughly 60%...
