My "Easter" hatch. 90 of my own generation 2 crosses, 1 pure BCM, and 5 heritage turkeys. See if you can figure out which is what.
Chicken egg hatch date is 3/15.
FWIW, there are reasonably priced computer backup power units (UPS=Uninterruptable Power Supply) that not only can provide hours of power during an outage, but also protect sensitive bator electronics from spikes and/or brown-outs. APC is, IMO, the best vendor for such products.
Well, I gotta leave the thread. Good mornings and good nights honestly just feel like ppl trying to increase their posts. So many things said in the thread that would be way better as private messages, I don't get it. Have fun folks, but consider that BYC has to store this stuff on a server...
You can see the difference in egg shell colors I'm getting. In this clutch of 122 eggs, only 18% were the darker brown, and that brown isn't even on the BCM chart. The lighter brown is the color all the eggs were from my Gen 0 layers.
I think I am going to start keeping eggs 14 days and...
Well, I am not keeping any cockerels. All my roosters will be pure bred. Right now I only have 2, but they are from very different lines and 1.5 year apart in age.
The other problem, is with 46 layers, I have no way to know which ones lay light. If you have any suggestions as to how I can...
With an automatic turner. Her point was, there's a big difference the more often you turn, so turn way more than 3 times if you can. You can only do what you can do, of course.
I've been mulling this over all day, so I figure I might as well post it here.
I'm setting 96 tomorrow. I expect I will have 131 eggs that are 10 days old or less. This hatch that's just finishing had eggs of the same ages, and I got perfectly normal chicks from every egg date. But I want to...
So, here I am 22 hours into Day 22 and I have 2 chicks and 1 pipped (and chirping) egg left in my bator. My fertility rate is down, probably because its winter, but its only 68.75%. My hatch rate is about average for me, 77.27%, with 6 early deaths and 9 late. That gave me 51 live chicks, but so...
Nate, I used my dogs as the test as to whether I had provided enough protection to my chickens. So 3' of mesh was laid against the walls going 1' up and 2' out, to prevent digging. Then I decided to give them an outdoor run, using old pool fencing. Well, I didn't do the same thing on the ground...
I am sure I am not the first one to say this, but I haven't seen it posted before...
When I ordered my brooding plates from Premier 1, I also ordered 10 ceramic fake eggs. I have pullets who are laying on the ground instead of in nesting boxes and they rarely use more than the lower 5, so I...
I don't have a way of monitoring the trays temps, but I did switch them around a couple of times during the incubation.
My hatches are always planned to be 23 days, so I am being patient.
You may be very right about the frozen eggs, we certainly had such temperatures. I will start keeping a...
I THINK I know one thing about dark eggs, if they are infertile, they glow with the right candling. If the light doesn't make them glow, I think that means there is some development. I have no idea if this is true, but its what I am currently using as fact...
@ronott1 , I would love to see suggestions about hatching dark eggs. I have a lot of eggs in my bator at the moment which are just dark, you can't see an air cell, or anything....
So, a serious question please.
I am now on day 22, and I have a quandary. Most of those that hatched of my 89 that went into lockdown are the older eggs, not the younger. I set eggs that were no older than 9 days, and eggs laid on the day of setting. Eggs that were 2-3 days old were the worst...
