More chicks still hatching, so I don't have a final count yet. In the meantime, here's a photo of my silkie chicks that hatched. There are lots of blue laced red wyandottes and Easter/ olive eggers too.. I will take photos of them later.

I'm starting to see a few pips in the incubator! This time, I remembered to put a light in the incubator so that I could see what was happening without a flashlight. :)

Yes! You are on day 18 now with day 19 starting at 9pm tonight. I set mine at about 9pm on Saturday so I'm on day 19 with day 20 beginning at 9pm tonight.

Sorry to hear about your rooster! If he had 2 copies of the barring gene, all his offspring g will be barred. If he only had 1 copy (which is more likely since he's an EE), only half of his offspring will be barred. Chicks with barring will be identifiable at hatch by a white spot on top of the...

I was originally planning to get the incukit but my husband decided that he could order stuff on eBay and do it cheaper. We put two 40w heating elements in it that appear to be the same type that are in my LG styrofoam incubators. I'll have to look for the booklet that came with the thermostat...

The 7th Annual BYC Easter Hatch-A-Long!

Our first hatch in the new incubator was a success! Lots of adorable fluffy chicks. Some surprises- like more chicks with feathered feet than I was expecting from my EE hens. They are with a black copper marans rooster (with feathered feet) and an EE rooster. I assumed that there would be yellow...

I did have an ameraucana/ australorp mix hen. She was black with a pea comb and just a hint of a beard. Good layer. I expected her to lay greenish eggs but she ended up laying blue eggs instead.

Yikes! Hope it isn't too expensive to fix. We had some bad winds recently too. Did some damage to the roof of our house and barn but not enough for the insurance to cover it, of course.

They are hardier than we give them credit for. I had a broody hen abandon her chicks during hatching the day before thanksgiving. I came outside first thing in the morning to find still wet icy cold lifeless chicks in the nest. I thought I saw a toe twitch on one of them so I brought them inside...

Thank you all for the input! I think I will try hatching on the second shelf up from the bottom of my wine refridgerbator where it is 98 degrees. Added benefit of lockdown: more room in the turner for my EHAL eggs. It will be nice to not have to hand turn the extras.

The 7th Annual BYC Easter Hatch-A-Long!

Slightly odd question... Is 96 degrees too cold for hatching? I assume that it is.. but if day old chicks need 95 degrees to stay warm, perhaps a lightly lower than normal temp is ok? I'm trying to decide whether to set up an LG incubator for hatching or to use the bottom part of my cabinet...

The 7th Annual BYC Easter Hatch-A-Long!

I had 2 like that last year. One happened when I accidentally put a hole in the egg while candling. There was a bit of dirt on it and I scraped it and a chunk of shell came off with it. I sealed the hole with candle wax but the air cell moved to the side of the egg. Amazingly, the chick...

Interesting. Perhaps I'll have some seramas then! Fun! So sorry about your chick!! Probably! Just smaller than the bantams I have. Unless the small eggs are from something besides a chicken... I have a black sex link rooster that has white legs with black speckles. I didn't realize that was...

I set 20 more eggs today. I have no idea what they are. Some were only 20-25g. What kind of chicken lays an egg that small? My Silkies and Cochins lay eggs that are about 40g... So weird. It will be a surprise!

The 7th Annual BYC Easter Hatch-A-Long!

Well, I bought 2 dz eggs at the farmers market today. I'm going to candle the eggs I set last week, pull any infertile eggs and fill in with a few of these BYM for fun. There are all different colors and sizes.. Some 70g+ eggs and some that are barely 20g. It should be a fun surprise...
