Too bad we've been so dry here. If the contest was most SMOKED fowl I might win, we've had so many grass fires go wild here (in fact three buildings on the south side of town caught fire the other day!) Everything reeks of smoke!
Whelp, I have 3 eggs that still haven't pipped so I am guessing they are DIS. All my others chicks have all gone to their new homes. I had 14 hatch. 6 clears. 1 blood ring. 1 late quitter. 1 died while zipping (that drives me nuts!) and 3 DIS. Not a great hatch. Several of my chicks were...
13 out with 1 more on the way. 3 eggs I don't think are going to hatch but I'll give them till tomorrow to pip. Then it's off to deliver them to my pops.
11 have hatched! I had one start zipping and was about 3/4 of the way around. Two hours later is hadn't changed. Snagged it out and found it DIS. :( nothing appeared wrong. Membrane was moist, vessels gone, yolk absorbed. Just died for no apparent reason! I have two more pipped and 4 not...
they were probably goopy. You can give them a warm bath to soften the feathers. Make sure you dry them. You can also just leave them and they will be fine just not fluffy
UGH! Roaming dogs are the worst! We had two come and decimate our buff orpington flock several years back. Went from 30 birds to 6. My sister (who was only 11 at the time) actually saved her pet barred rock by chasing one of the labs and hitting it on the head with a stick (brave girl!) which...
Re-candled my duds again today and found one was alive! Made me happy I saved them. Took out the seven that were no good. I have 19 growing, including one of the cracked ones! I have not put anything over the crack, but it's moving and growing!
Even if they are clear, with shipped eggs sometimes even if they were fertile they are too damAged to grow so will remain "clears" the only way to check is to gently crack them open and look for the bullseye or spot.
Fyi you can make your own probiotics cheap by feeding/making yogurt (SUPER EASY) for your chickens or kombucha (less easy). My chickens go insane when I chop up the scoby for them and they love it when I mix yogurt into their feed
Edit: fermented feed is also probiotic!
Day 6- 8 marked as duds. 1 blood ring and 7 clears. 2 were hard to see so marked questionable. Out of 26 that's not great, but since I had low temps in the beginning and 3 are only on day 5 I'm going to recandle on day ten before tossing any.
Thanks everyone! Yes, we love Dr.bronners lavender bath soap! :) Getting him to sleep is not the problem, it's him waking up several times wanting to nurse! And really, at one year old he should be sleeping through the night! Haha I think I'm soft because I know he is my last. :(
