International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

It’s not a real big deal I knew the risk when I set the eggs. I currently have an olive egger hen brooding 6 chicks in the same coop. I think the jersey tried stealing her chicks once and got run off. Now she thinks the new chicks belong to the other broody and is waiting on the golf balls.

International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

I have a Jersey Giant that spends most of her life broody. She has been sitting on golf balls for 3 weeks. I tried to give her brand new chicks straight out of the incubator and she ignored the chick. Even when I took the golf balls away she sat on imaginary eggs and refused to keep the chick.

They always say you can’t convince a hen to go broody but I’m a firm believer that a broody hen absolutely can talk her friends into joining her.

My chicks are olive Eggers not pure Marans. I prefer to let broody hens raise chicks so my chicks eat the same as the adults. Everyone gets Kalmbach flock maker 20% crumbles. Sometimes I switch to Kalmbach layer crumbles during winter when I don’t have any chicks. The Kalmbach layer feed has...

Did they offer any proof of champion status or elaborate what they won. Champion of a 4H fair is a champion. Maybe they are really good bloodlines but I’m always skeptical of anyone I don’t know.

A Marans should have feathers down the outside of its shanks and feathers on the outer toes only. A Brahma should have heavily feathered shanks and feathers on all four toes. Egg color is really inconsistent with hatchery stock. She will almost certainly lay the darkest eggs in your flock but...

I haven’t hatched from shipped eggs yet but I believe 24 hours of rest is the standard recommendation. Then candle and check for any abnormal air cells

I don’t think 6 days is terribly concerning presumably they were just sitting in a temperature controlled warehouse for a couple days part way through the journey. Probably not a whole lot different than if the breeder would have held on to them for a couple days to avoid the weekend.

The colored egg groups I am a part of are always talking about Greenfire Farms.

I have done a lot of reading and a little bit of breeding for egg color. The blue egg gene is easy it’s a single gene that changes white eggs to blue or brown to green. You can see if the girls carry the gene by the color of her eggs. Roosters can be test bread to know hens and observe eggs of...

International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

The SOP calls for dark rich brown. Many people have tried breeding for more purple or red eggs but from what I have seen they usually lose the bird in the hunt for the egg. They often sacrifice body type, and/or overall health because they focus too hard on the egg. I’m sure it’s possible, given...

I agree with the others and would like to add that the whole purpose of breeding is breeding for improvement. You can’t always say one hen is better or worse than the other unless you know what rooster you’re putting over them. It’s common to use an over colored rooster to “fix” the offspring of...

Thank you for your comments. The first picture was taken in August and that color is fairly accurate. I think his color was sun bleached. All summer long he seemed to get lighter in color they were very pale yellow on the feather tips just before molting.

It’s been a while since I posted anything in this thread so I thought I would check in and post a few pictures. My only male BCM Axl is now 1 year and 4 months old. He has completed his first adult annual molt. His yellow halo looks a little better but it’s definitely still there. He picked up a...

I believe WTB should be homozygous for the blue egg gene so all of his daughters will lay some form of blue or green egg. Mine were back crosses so they only get 50% chance of the gene. Of the 3 pullets that hatched this year 2 are confirmed brown layers. Still waiting on the third

International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

Of the 9 I hatched I got 6 black and 3 blue. 2 of the blue ones came from a back cross BCM x blue colored OE. The blue with orange breast one I’m not sure on his exact mix but he was a good looking bird but didn’t fit into my long term goals and his attitude was not good enough to make any sort...
