    HALLOWEEN Hatch-a-Long 2016 w/ Hosts, Mike, Sally & BantyChooks

Make that 49. Don't know if a couple of them are going to make it but they've hung in there so far. 87.5% of those in lockdown hatched so I can't complain. Watching an otherwise healthy looking chick with severe scissor beak and a handful with clubbed feet is heartbreaking though. Never had...

    HALLOWEEN Hatch-a-Long 2016 w/ Hosts, Mike, Sally & BantyChooks

I say "we" very loosely. I have the stomach for it but not the eyes anymore. My wife is the egg surgeon. She has been successful 5 out of 6 times. The weak ones seem to be the ones that die 2-3 days after hatch.

    HALLOWEEN Hatch-a-Long 2016 w/ Hosts, Mike, Sally & BantyChooks

I'm beginning to think that we won't help any in the future. I left my bator closed for the whole hatch and three had remained pipped for many hours after all others hatched. We moved all chicks except two that weren't dry to the brooder and helped the other three out. We only opened them enough...

    HALLOWEEN Hatch-a-Long 2016 w/ Hosts, Mike, Sally & BantyChooks

Bitter and sweet hatch. 48 of 56 made it but we had health problems for the first time ever. 6 chicks from eggs by another breeder have foot issues where they are turned in like club-foot or pigeon toed, and 1 has splay leg. One of mine has scissor beak. I'm going to give them all a shot and see...

    HALLOWEEN Hatch-a-Long 2016 w/ Hosts, Mike, Sally & BantyChooks

Can't count but at least 30 babies this morning. They were busy overnight. Only 6 when I went to bed.

I have a quail translator and I swear the golden is running around screaming, "Rise my minions! It's time to take over the world!!!"

    HALLOWEEN Hatch-a-Long 2016 w/ Hosts, Mike, Sally & BantyChooks

(Mortal Kombat voice) It has begun! Babies were officially due to start hatching last night so the family was bummed when the bator wasn't full of fluff this morning. 16 hours into day 17 and first place goes to a golden and very close second to an A&M. 54 more to hope over.

    HALLOWEEN Hatch-a-Long 2016 w/ Hosts, Mike, Sally & BantyChooks

Time is flying. Tomorrow night my quail eggs go on lockdown. The babies will be on the ground by Halloween, I hope they don't get scared by the ghosts and goblins.

    HALLOWEEN Hatch-a-Long 2016 w/ Hosts, Mike, Sally & BantyChooks

Candled the quail eggs tonight (day 9) and removed 12 infertile/quitters. 56 little ones are getting ready for Halloween!

    HALLOWEEN Hatch-a-Long 2016 w/ Hosts, Mike, Sally & BantyChooks

One week mark. 68 coturnix eggs get candled for fertility tomorrow. Unlike my last hatch I haven't had to remove any stinkers or cracked eggs at this point. I used an Incubator Warehouse egg turner in my Hovabator Genesis last time, which was responsible for the cracked eggs. Hand turning 4-6...

    HALLOWEEN Hatch-a-Long 2016 w/ Hosts, Mike, Sally & BantyChooks

My quail eggs were set on Monday so will hatch long before Halloween. The bator is filled with a combination of eggs from a failure "jumbo breeder" of pharaohs, my own Mix of pharaoh/a&m mutts, and a breeders eggs who is going out of business including 30 random golden, silver, cinnamon and...
