Kim, great pictures of your dorkings from February. I waited until the end of April to hatch some of our dorking chicks because it had been so cold up here. I ended up culling the rooster after the hatch because he threw three 4 toed chicks and he was so darn mean to us. I was super excited...

The first ones I got from the hatchery in July started right at 5 months. I hatched some out last October and they did not start laying until late March this spring.

Way to go junior!! You have to love a rooster like that, he would be a keeper and I hope he is on the mend.

Does anyone ever get 4 toes when breeding all 5 toed Dorkings hens with 5 toed Dorking rooster? from what I've read it can happen if the rooster and hen have a 4 toed recessive gene. Is this correct?

I agree raising SG Dorkings is not a science it is a journey and that is why I find it exciting.

The only thing I've showed are horses. So I would need some serious mentoring on how to groom a chicken and how to keep them healthy while off the farm.
