I get an egg almost every day from my hens that are just now a tad over 1 yr old. Don't have enough experience with different colors other than black and white, Have 1 SG hen so my input there isn't any good. My blacks are excellent eggs layers, eggs aren't as white as the white birds produce...

My black Dorkings are usually right on time but it seems most of the whites have been taking an extra day but not all of them....

If i catch them in the shorter live trap they can't raise their tail. Either way I shoot the stinky things right in the trap if they spray i just hose the trap off from a distance. I let the trap dry and let the stink die down before i go near it. I don't catch and release.... Use rubber...

Make that 14 whites 2 blacks and still no spots. Maybe I finally got the right birds together. Guess I shouldn't be worrying about the spots so much anyway. The chicks are looking really nice and it sure is cool watching them have the run of the big coop. Know I shouldn't say it but they sure...

Skunks will crawl right up a chickens butt to get an egg. I'm here to tell ya, don't do the chicken much good. Was told they will even do that to a rooster..... They don't know the difference I guess...

Yes when it's colder I do that if i have the time. I try and give my birds a well balanced diet and meat is part of it. I'm thinking that possum is better for them than that bag of GMO food I get from TSC. Of course the possum probably ate plenty of GMO corn before he came here. I call it hair...

14 Dorking chicks hatched so far, 12 whites and 2 blacks. Not seeing any black spots this time... Sometimes they don't show up so good at first though... I let some smaller chicks loose in the coops and they can sneak through the fence in the runs but seem to stay within their confines...

I hear ya and I'm not going to outcross our dorkings at all. Just thought it was interesting that they wrote 3 articles about grading in the same bulletin. Have to admit it was an interesting read. I have already been applying the same basic breeding method with our ISA Brown back cross project...

Just got my American Standard of Perfection book a couple weeks ago. Been so busy havemn'y had much time to read it all but I did read over the Dorking information. Yes, I had quite a bit to learn. Don't feel that I would have made different rooster selections without the SOP but I may have...

Good stuff there. I'm not that up on fertility issues but i did notice something that seems to work pretty good. I notice my number 1 rooster gets lax when he is with the same hens for a spell. But when I put him in a new coop with different hens he suddenly becomes very active. He will service...

Same here all of our roosters are eager to service their hens. I do have one that seems to have a difficult time hitting the mark though. It's like he falls off sometimes before he gets positioned correctly but he just does his thing anyway lol. The other thing is he is kicking out a lot of...

Looking forward to it. Hope you get those pens built soon. Thanks for the pictures and for answering my question there about the blue color. I'll try and take a picture or maybe a video today, it's really nice out.

Hey thanks heritagehabitatfarms. Not really sure what we'll do with the cuckoo's. I hate to take on something we don't have the space to mess with. I think we should work on both whites and blacks for a while before we try this experiment again. Figure it's best to get both lines cleaned up and...

Interesting thing happened. I remember a while back mentioning that I was interested in crossing the whites to the blacks and might get some Cuckoo colored birds. Then I was informed that would only happen if the birds carry the barred gene. Well guess what?....... Yep, I have black birds with...

Something I noticed this season is that our roosters seem to become more active in the fertility dept when there are given different coops with different hens. We switch out our best rooster to a new coop about every 4-5 days. As soon as he's let go in the new coop he greets all his girls...

I got chicks from YellowHouse last year, 2012 and have been nothing but happy with them. We are hatching white dorking chicks from those birds and wow are we getting some awesome looking chicks. Not a huge number this year but that's how it goes til ya get a good number of excellent quality...

Liberty Nursery, Dorkings aren't really a breed designed for that kind of solitary confinement, They like to free range or at least have an area to forage for food. They need to go outside...... If I were going to do what you want I'd go with a modern meaty breed that already grows faster...

Yes and thank you very much for helping Rockashelle. Also like the subtle way you worked that so I'd know there were 2 nice ladies looking for whites. Not being sarcastic either... I try and avoid that due to my lack of skills in that area. People sometimes think I'm being sarcastic when I'm...
