I, too, am in central TX and fond of Dorkings. I purchased a young adult trio from Mr. Urch, shipped in the fall of last year, learning to incubate and hatch my own chicks this year. I have some concerns regarding hatch ability, please refer to my posts in other threads on this forum and on the...
No, the McMurray strain of Silver Grey Dorkings is not color/feather sexable at hatch, however mine last year were all sexable by 6 weeks of age, some a little sooner. :-)
Kyzmette, If you have not opened the eggs from the incubator, then you do not know whether they were never fertilized, or whether they were fertilized but the embryos stopped developing before they were big enough to see when candling. Until you open these incubated eggs, you cannot...

are you worried about fertility(eggs not developing AT ALL when incubated,) or hatchability(eggs started developing in the incubator but did not produce a live chick)? The FB Dorking group recently discussed hatchability, and best claimed hatchability was 60%. That is, 60% of fertile...
Last year, one of my Silver Grey pullets also had a white/silver breast long after all the other pullets had salmon breasts. Mr. Urch said not to worry, it would come in later. My pullet did develop a salmon breast, around 4 or 5 months of age.

Hi, Jennifer, welcome to BYC!
As regarding predators, I recommend the old-timey "SSS" method whenever possible. (shoot, shovel and shut up.) I also have had very good results with poultry-friendly Livestock Guardian Dogs, specifically Great Pyrenees and Anatolian Shepherds.
Best wishes,
Angela
I may have missed it in an earlier post, but how old are your Urch birds
They are "young" adults per Mr. Urch. The terms cock and hen refer to any birds over one year of age, but do not specify exactly how much older the birds may be. Cockerels and pullets are chickens less than one year of age.
I was finally able to weigh my Urch trio of SG Dorkings. The cock weighs 6 lb, 1 oz, looks small, feels thin. The big hen feels 'about right' and weighs 6 lb, 1.4 oz. the small hen feels thin, weighs 4 lb, 6.8 oz. I will post pics when they stop hiding from me when I approach their pen. I will...
Not yet, but when I get my adult trio from Urch I will post pics and weights. AND, when my McMurray chicks are grown, I will post the weights of the keepers.
I have 30 three-week-old Dorkings from McMurray on my screened-in-porch, none have crooked or curled toes. Last year I ordered 25 black and dark grey Dorkings from Sandhill and had 2 with curled toes in the delivery box, and 1-2 more developed crooked/curled toes after moving to the barn at 3...
To state the painfully obvious: 1. google him. 2. Click on links found.
I believe the Heritage Exhibition Turkey thread has his 2013 list posted. His hatchery sells chickens, turkeys, ducks, geese, and possibly a few things I have forgotten.
I believe Miss Manners said that one must be thick-skinned to interact socially, and it seems we have at least one thin-skinned person on this thread. I do not understand why anyone would think a poster who has criticized the management choices of other Dorking admirers should not in turn...
I don't think their combs look all that pale for the dead of winter. I am jealous, and wish I had them.
I don't know if it fits your paradigm of chicken husbandry, but there was a thread on rescuing neglected chickens that were afflicted with internal and external parasites, started by username...
I'm sorry,I can't contribute to the genetics discussion.
But on a couple of other threads I follow, people are talking about customizing feeding regimes for specific breeds, or different phases of the chickens' life cycle. Have any of you found a custom supplement or mix that seemed to make a...
Did Mr Urch or his employee tell you this? I haven't directly communicated with them, but last year he sold Dorkings through Strombergs, although not directly through his hatchery.
