The seminar was very informative. I've been interested in wild foods for some time...ever since we got goats (started wondering what **I** could eat) but no amount of internet research will compare to talking to someone whose Grandmother would tell to go out and get some polk for dinner. and...
Some of you know Craig Russell. He is into Dorkings and is the president of the SPPA ( Society for the Preservation of Poultry Antiques?)
He also does Wild foods seminars and will be doing one this weekend down in Wytheville that I’m seriously considering going to (but have to work out the...
yeah...that's what it looks like to me, too. 2 boys and 2 girls.
the breed is very friendly if you acustom them to human contact. best personalities of almost all my chickens. laid back and interested in what you are doing. congrats on your new babies!
it is bizarre, but I had two broody hens (different breeds) that I stuck eggs under at the same time. regarless of who hatched whom, the one hen eventually got all the light colored chicks and the other hen took all the dark colored ones. and they are cliquish...bigtime. that's why I started...
Honestly, my red dorking boy is a sweetheart. all my girls are pleasant, but unfortunately the ones I could just walk up to to pick up were taken by a dang fox. I am hoping to hatch some more this year to bolster my numbers back.
I have had ens double team and raise chicks twice, although they were not all dorkings. my first pair was a pair of Barnevelders who tag-teamed 6 chicks total between them. right now I have 2 broody mommas side by side one dorking and one Rhodebar. they seem to be swapping chicks freely at...
it's probably a bit soon but the husband and I are going to England in the fall. I could hand carry eggs if that is needed.
or whatever...
how much money is required?
okay, cool...that means we have outwitted him finally. we were losing a chicken every three days like clockwork for most of the summer until we finally just bought a fortune's worth of electric net fence and circled it around our whole hill. (about 3 acres)
maybe weasles only hunt at night...
I got some lovely birds from eggs from Craig, unfortunately not SOP colors, though. blue-reds mostly with unspecified dilution genes. I would love some eggs from real colored birds if anyone gets through to Rudy, let me know! I have one "colored" girl (I think) that I am going to put with...
aw, that's so sweet! I've been naming mine after cavemen. grandparents are a much better idea...as long as they arent going to be on the dinner table.
I hope they are doing well for you? what color?
Thanks! He isn't a registered color. I think he is blue-red with some kind of diluting gene that has turned the red to cream. I got him (as an egg) from Craig Russell. I have some blue-red girls I am going to pair him with this year. the rose comb one may also have the diluting gene.
Thanks so much.
Mongo was a good boy. He was attacked once by a fox trying to save his girls and got bitten in the process but managed to make it.
Tonda is a good boy too, and has quite a following, the girls love him. So he must be doing something right. He seems to do a good job taking...
Well, I lost Mongo to the cold. he wasn't in the coop last night...he had chosen to hunker down under the goat shed. I thought he' be fine under there but he wasn't. kicking myself now. woke to find him frozen stiff.
But I still have his son, who honestly looks identical to him. and I...
I love the chipmunk colored ones, too, and yours is adorable!!!!!
Man, I cant wait for spring. I have a self imposed rule after last year of no hatching in the winter, but my resolve is wavering as the winter seems so long.
we had a week long power outage last year where we were running the...
