Did ya guys see this coop on news this week? Cute idea! https://www.google.com/amp/amp.fox13news.com/trending/idaho-couple-create-chicken-coop-shaped-as-a-ufo
Got nest boxes attached to the back...did a bit of changing up and added dust bath. Still have another roost to put back in since took out 2 shorter ones. Just not sure if I should put it low to the ground for my silkies, since they don't like to roost up high, if at all. That's also why I have...
I think so...they can move around better. The old coop was made from an old captains bed and not much head room. I knew I was moving and didn't wanna start them a new coop til I moved, which was first week of August. So once we got settled we started getting everything planned out and together...
No stalking of old coop. Half of em laid in new coop yesterday and all but one laid her eggs in new coop today.
I'll get updated pics posted when possible. Not home so can't take em atm. It's actually 12 hens and a roo. The guineas sleep in there sometimes and other times they like to stay out n...
I could close em up for couple days, but wouldn't want them to stay in for couple weeks since they're used to being out all day, everyday..I have closed the other coop and will keep it closed. Thinking that I will keep them in for 2 days and then let em out mid day for next few days after that...
still have work to do on inside, roof covering with overhang and drip edge. All roosts come out easily for changing out and cleaning. And windows beside door close up for extreme weather. Made of all recycled and scrap decking and lumber except 7 2x4s so only spent 30 bux so far.
Got a question for everyone. What is best way to transition my ladies into using nest boxes in new coop? One did lay their egg in there early this morning before they were let out to free range. I do have dummy eggs in them, but as soon as all were out they rushed to old small coop to try n get...
Yeah I'm more worried about have proper ventilation and air exchange. It's a whole lot easier to cover a vent than add one later. They will huddle together in evening to keep from getting too chilled as long as wind can't come blowing in on them.
My windows will actually have hinged boards so I can close completely if need be. I just want to make sure I have enough air flow through all seasons as we do have 4 where I am and from one day to the next can be totally different...was 90 here 2 days ago and yesterday was low 70s and low...
I actually went and measured inside height to peak it's 6 ft 8 inches inside and of course goes down as roof slants. I'm a bit over 5 ft so I made the door 5 ft 5in. I know I may have to watch header board of door frame when stepping in but pretty used to that since I have one of those cheap...
As planned right now I have approx. 8 sqft for ventilation, not including the door cuz still deciding on whether or not to make it completely open or only half. That also doesn't account for cracks in between boards on back n front. If I did half the door that would add another 6 or so sq ft of...
I will probably be building a different coop next spring or converting my shed and trading this one out to ducks or storage, but I wanted to get the chickens straight before winter as the one they're in now isn't ideal for winter. And since I had majority of material already here and soon to be...
I am planning on using a removable tarp sling under my staggered roosts and poop board on other roost for easier cleaning and to keep it a bit more tidy.
Yes PDZ is great too. I've used it in past. Shavings are ok, I prefer pelleted pine like ya use for horses better tho. I use pelleted pine and straw for my ducks. I've used all kinds of "litter" and do switch up from time to time..find myself always going back to paver base sand. Cute coop. I...
