OHio ~ Come on Buckeyes, let me know your out there!

I had a sick pullet that I had to euthanize this past weekend, so I just spent a grim evening going through Gail Damerow's "Chicken Health Handbook." Your feed might be fine nutritionally, but have been contaminated with mold or something. Chickens get botulism which can cause sudden death if...

I got my very first chickens as day-olds on Nov 5, 2010. Stupid, stupid, but they were willing to ship from NM and I was avid about getting started. It was snowing when I picked them up from the post office. I brooded them in a metal water trough in my kitchen until the night before...

OHio ~ Come on Buckeyes, let me know your out there!

I've had that kind of summer, and now with winter approaching, I'm still overrun with boys. Two swaps and 40 days on Craig's List and I was able to give one roo away out of 11 (and possibly 14; the last three are still in down). I've not had to send any to freezer camp yet, but I have the...

I came home to a llama once. It was just on the other side of the road from my mailbox--at the time about 100 undeveloped, unused acres. I did a big double-take, that's for sure! He was halterless, but I tried to catch him anyway. He wasn't having it, and the people I thought he belonged to...

Belated, as usual, but I had a great time at the swap. Next time I'll have to set up in the thick of things, not at the end--looks like I didn't get to meet everyone who was there. Unfortunately, no one at all was in the market for roosters, so basically took my boys for a road trip! I talked...

I've always thought that if I lived in the South I'd get modern games, shamos, and buttercups. But here in Ohio, I've gone for pea-combed, cold-hardy Araucanas!

I'm bringing my lot of Araucana boys too. See you all next weekend!

Yeah, I watch the Columbus pair's webcam when they're nesting. Can't say I'm sorry they're coming back! I haven't seen any falcon larger than a kestrel here though.

Sorry it took me so long to reply to this--you miss a couple of days on this forum, and you never catch up! I put strings with plastic flagging over the runs to deter hawks. It seems to work--I had one chick disappear mysteriously last year, but that's the only one that might have gone the...

@ Shaybaby and OHhappychicks. I've discovered every single thing I plan for the chickens takes way more time and effort than I ever would have thought. I just automatically factor it in at this point! Your fencing solution is electronetting though. It teaches dogs to fly! And seriously, it...

That sounds like good news. It's always a relief to have a plan! Good luck.

My first six, I raised in a metal trough in my kitchen (because it was November and my unheated mudroom was too cold). They went out there the night before Thanksgiving, and after that epic clean-up I swore "No more chickens in the house!" So far, so good (the mudroom doesn't count!).

If the hens have gone broody, I say give them a chance. I'm fairly new to chickens, and inadvertently started out with lots of broody breeds (which has led to me breeding Araucanas). All my girls that have gone broody have been successful moms--I just leave them to it. If you can, just try to...

My vet agreed to check some chicken poop for worms for me when I brought in my cat. No sign at that time, and that was two years ago. I have access to microscopes at work, so I guess I could do it myself at some point too. I have never seen any signs of worms or external parasites except for...

I still have them, and will be bringing them to the Delaware swap Araucanas, though.

One my Araucanas started crowing at 5 weeks. I couldn't believe it! He's still with mom two weeks later, but he crows every morning. There's such a difference among bloodlines too. I had one last year that didn't start crowing until he was almost 7 months old. I had thought he was a boy...

We had a great time at the swap! I'm glad I got a chance to meet everybody. Thanks to all who helped catch my escapees! Next time we'll be a little more on our toes.

Speaking of driving.... We're coming from north of Columbus to the swap. I figure three hours at least, but I need to check that. At any rate, setting my alarm for 5:00 am. I plan to load up the car tonight with the cages to figure out how to fit everybody. I just got a most excellent Great...
