OHio ~ Come on Buckeyes, let me know your out there!

Welcome to the group, Nate. I think we should have state legislation here in Ohio that every chicken-keeper has to have at least one Buckeye in their flock. This is a great group here and is full of helpful people. Good to have you aboard.

Leslie, it's a good thing you know us. Come springtime, we'll see what we can do to make sure you have LITTLE red hens for your farm. They are cuties, aren't they? And congratulations for doing so well at the ON. Nice to see Ohio being so well represented at the show.

I'm not sure who would have any up in your corner of the state this time of the year, but you might check with Joe Shumaker (blueface3) https://www.backyardchickens.com/u/108530/bluface3 or Jeff Lay https://www.backyardchickens.com/u/290715/jeff-lay and see what they have or if they know of...

OHio ~ Come on Buckeyes, let me know your out there!

I plan on being there. Was hoping to pick up some Silver Spangled Hamburgs, but the exhibitor got a new job and won't be there. Still, the North American Hamburg Club is having a meet, so hopefully I'll meet some of them. Most importantly, I plan on hanging out with the Buckeye folks. Great...

If it's not, it should be. Was at a close-of-season party for our school's cross country team and the host had a flock of a dozen hens with exactly 1 Buckeye in it. IMO, they needed to replace their Delawares with Buckeyes as a show of state solidarity.

I know you do, Leslie. And I expect to see you next month at the Ohio National again. Most likely in the parking lot, just like last time, with a batch of silkies for sale. LOL. If I'm not mistaken, you may be able to pick up some Buckeyes at the end of the ON, if the exhibitor I'm thinking...

And I think we might be able to talk Josh into hatching some out for folks in the spring. If you can wait that long.

OHio ~ Come on Buckeyes, let me know your out there!

I have posted elsewhere that I believe it is the patriotic duty of EVERY Ohio chicken-keeper to have at least one Buckeye chicken. This breed has a great story, a great history, and most important of all, great breed characteristics. Leslie teases me about my Buckeyes, but I love the breed...

Shawn, What did you make your incubator/hatcher out of? Is it a repurposed cooler? Also, where did you get your Buckeyes from? Nice to see folks in Ohio breeding them. rick

What are your goals? If you want brown eggs, I'd recommend Golden comets from Meyer or Mt. Healthy or else Golden buffs from Eagle's Nest. They are all laying machines and they are fairly small hens for the jumbo size eggs they lay. If you want white eggs, Meyer and Eagle's Nest both have...

OHio ~ Come on Buckeyes, let me know your out there!

Buckeyes. They were bred in Ohio for Ohio (especially the winters) by an Ohioan, so what other breed would you want? But you gotta love Little Red Hens and dark red roosters. They are totally unlike RIRs in personality, being a lot calmer and friendlier.

There's a guy last name of Weiss that raises Blue Andalusians. They're very pretty birds and lay white eggs. He lives in Morrow Co (just north of Delaware Co.) if you don't mind coming up this way. I can PM you his number if you're interested.

OH happy chicks, Your sig line says you have Silver Spangled Hamburgs. Are they LF or bantams? I ordered some from Meyer last year and they were definitely bantam sized. I've been looking for LF Hamburgs for a while and have only found two breeders, one online and another guy in the Northeast...

Good work, Leslie. Keep us posted on the dates. I'm planning on a September hatch of Buckeyes and some hybrid Buckeye x Barred Rocks (maybe). I would be happy to set some more Buckeye eggs for an October hatch if you manage to pull this off. As far as space is concerned, I'm sure he'd use...
