Lost the first baby that ever hatched from the initial pair of pigeons that I got back in 2018. (Dad died October of 23, Mom died this January). This baby (Bugsy) was found dead this morning. 6 years, 6 days old. Her hatchmate died at just a few days old, but I still have several of her own...
I took a slow motion video of my pigeons this morning. There's so much going on! Check out the eye blinks, and the head shake.... and the flight out of the water is amazing to me!
How is this going to go? I have a pigeon that has now hatched a porcelain d’uccle! I see she still has at least one more egg, possibly more. I suppose I may have to bring the chicks inside, since I surprisingly don’t have a broody d’uccle hen at the moment. She sure looks proud though.
Beautiful bird! My first thought also was it couldn’t have come far, since they don’t fly well. Maybe look around your area for pigeon lofts in backyards? The National Pigeon Association publishes their membership list. I’d be happy to look at the latest issue for addresses closest to you if...
Glad you found your way here. The new kennel looks great! Looks like she has room to fly around a bit, and stretch her wings. She’s lucky such a caring person rescued her. :love
Had my first squabs of the year hatch a couple weeks ago, but they both died within the first 3 days. One appeared to have hatched with a little yolk unabsorbed, and was dead when I first saw them, the other died a couple days later, during that really cold weather we had. But mom is at it...
Thanks. These were sold to me as Satinettes. I’ve honestly never been able to determine any positive differences in German Owls, Satinettes, Old Frills, Oriental Frills, etc, other than original country of origin. There are some variations on beak size/shape, but they all look pretty much the...
Lost the female of my original pair today. Locking up the chickens and ducks at dark, saw her laying on the ground dead. Not exactly sure how old she was, she wasn’t banded, but I got her in October, 2018. :( RIP Bonnie.
My Satinettes have quite a bit of flying room in their regular area (fully metal roofed), but I also have a trap door that I can let them out into my net-covered duck pen. It’s probably 5 times the area that they normally stay in. They get a longer flight, and enjoy the extra exercise.
I have...
And since Seramas were mentioned, I had a group of girls just hatch a bunch together. 15 chicks so far, a few girls are still sitting. It’s a group effort! Lol
My pigeons use sticks, feathers, and leaves mostly. I try to throw a few piles of leaves into their pen every few weeks. My yard gets totally covered with leaves in the fall, so I always have plenty to scoop up!
Banded another new squab this morning. 2 weeks old today.
Welcome!
I first took an interest in fantail pigeons, the ones that their tails fan out like a turkey on display. I found some locally, met up with a fella at a poultry swap, but decided against the fantails when I saw he had Satinettes! So beautiful, I fell in love with them. Then I started...
I had some parakeets that I sold a couple weeks ago, and their cage was going to waste, so I converted it to use in my pigeon pen. Didn’t take them long to inspect it.
I discovered a new squab yesterday that I had somehow missed. I barely was able to get a band on its leg, so it’s at least 2 weeks old. (I try to band around 10 days- 2 weeks) This is what happens when you have 60+ birds during mating season. :lau
