    Variations from 2nd generation crossbreed

The Rainbow Rock have turned out fantastic. More of a platinum tone, than grey. Weighed a hen yesterday. 8 pounds 3 ounces. Despite this, I've been so obsessed with The Florida flock that they are all that I am hatching myself. I've bought a Brinsea and am now running two incubators. I have...

    Variations from 2nd generation crossbreed

I had 9 white roos. I have chosen the Wingman to become the sire of my Florida crossbreed project. He's going to be the biggest. Some of them look sweet but he has a fierce look. He's very shy. I'm slowly winning him over. We're going to be great friends. Blackfoot will keep the girls who are...

    Variations from 2nd generation crossbreed

I hatched 16 yesterday that are almost all Rainbow 75s. This variation produced 50% white birds. I have an example of this line in the 3 week and 7 week old birds. She is much bigger than her brothers and sisters. The red pigment of the Dixie Rainbows is finally overpowering the Black of the...

    Variations from 2nd generation crossbreed

The first hatch is 10 weeks old today. This guy is starting to look fierce but they're really pussycats. Golden Boy, one of the white roos, has developed a lot of subtle barring. He is sort of a Barred White The white birds from my 3rd hatch are very different. They are developing unique...

    Variations from 2nd generation crossbreed

I just realized that I have never shown Waldo, the grandaddy of Rainbow Rock. I felt so bad when I had to sell him to let Blackfoot take over the flock.

    Variations from 2nd generation crossbreed

Half of the hatches are breeding true to the first generation crossbreed. Here is a first generation Rainbow Rock hen alongside her mother. 2nd generation birds are now about 9 weeks old. There is a black strain that is repeating in all hatches. I was filling a water bowl and she came up...

    Variations from 2nd generation crossbreed

They are 75% Dixie Rainbow and 25% Barred Rock. The Barred Rock are silver based but the caramel of the Rainbows is starting to tint some of the white chicks.

    Variations from 2nd generation crossbreed

BC1 Thank you! I'm still gonna call them Rainbow 75s though. I'm gonna call the white strain that look like Delawares ... Golden Rainbows. I'm probably going to have to choose between my F1 rooster and a BC1 once they grow. Hard to keep separate flocks when you want to free range.

    Variations from 2nd generation crossbreed

Rainbow 75 alongside F2 I saw this pic and thought the bird's foot was deformed. I went outside to check it out and it's perfect. The camera must have caught it as the bird was running or something?

    Variations from 2nd generation crossbreed

Thank you. So what would my Rainbow 75s be called by normal people? They are purebred Dixie Rainbow hens X F1 rooster

    Variations from 2nd generation crossbreed

Thank you. Yes, this Birchen Marans looks just like Fifi. I looked up the definition of F1. So what I'm calling second generation is really F1 ? My next hatch is all 75% Dixie Rainbow. I have one of those in each of my last two hatches and they're very large. Sadly I may have to stop hatching...

    Variations from 2nd generation crossbreed

I looked up Delaware and I see that they were achieved through a strikingly similar path. I'm sure you're probably aware but they are a cross between Barred Rock and New Hampshire. The New Hampshire here looks a lot like my Dixie Rainbows...

    Variations from 2nd generation crossbreed

Thank God that was the simple version. I got flashbacks to my fruit fly experiments. Would you breed the offspring that are standardizing to the first generation. Or would you breed the whites and blacks and Fifi and other throwbacks? When you said Delaware, were you talking about Golden...

    Variations from 2nd generation crossbreed

Birds that are almost black are another one of the genetic throwbacks that I'm seeing in the females. I see these two together a lot. I'll try to sell them as a pair.
