My second flock of girls is starting to lay. The green egg on the left came from Precious (the black chicken), and the brown one on the right from a Buff Orpingong (Marlena). Marlena laid her first egg at 19.5 weeks, and Precious at 20 weeks. Amazing.
The middle egg is a large egg from a...
She is beautiful. My GLW's eggs are a pink color unlike anyone elses (Her coloring isn't nearly as defined as Gretchen's). She started laying at about 24 weeks and lays an egg almost every day.

I know just what you mean by magical. My Golden Campine (who has morphed from a nervous, skittish girl to a loving lap chicken since she started squatting) laid her second egg practically in my lap one morning. She NEVER uses a nest box, and I find her eggs just about anywhere in the coop...
I can't really answer that. The large egg from the lady I used to buy eggs from before my girls started laying fits fine, and it looks like there woud be plenty of room for anything but an eggzilla.

Thanks, Sharol -- your link didn't turn up on my Internet search earlier today...
I ordered it directly from the creator at http://www.egg-skelter.co.uk/ . It was about $46 shipped (used PayPal), and it was shipped right away. It took a month to clear customs and make it to Kansas, though.
I got my first egg from Lisbeth, the Welsumer, today. I can't tell you how happy I am to get it because I was afraid she was having trouble laying. There have been softshelled eggs under the roost almost every day right where she sits, but now I know they weren't hers.
The egg:

My little EE lays me a lovely green egg almost every day. I go out to let them out into the run about 7:30 or 8 and she is nearly always in the nest box. Sometimes she is in there for a couple of hours, but when she comes out singing, I know there is an egg for me. She's been laying a couple...
Irony. I have a pullet named Misty (for "mystery chick") I wasn't sure what her breed was until she was nearly 4 weeks old. I now have an unidentified egg. It is smaller than my Del's eggs but the same color. Since it has a little blood on it, I'm pretty sure it is a new layer. The only...
Lucy, my Delaware, laid her first egg today. It was completely unexpected since she has a tiny comb that isn't the least bit red yet. It was speckledy (is that a word?).
And Lovely Lucy (named for Lucille Ball, "Lucy Raises Chickens").
I got my first egg EVER today from my golden campine, Scout.
There was a little blood on the egg, and it was still warm when I found it. It is 27 degrees here and blowing snow, so I'm glad I got to it right after she laid it.
