    The Honey Factory

Do you know a beekeeper? Offer to help them. Even if you don't know anything, another pair of hands during a hive inspection can be a big help. Consider getting a second hive. I wish we'd had two when we started. That way, you can compare the two to see differences that mean something. You will...

    The Honey Factory

Our basswood has bloomed the last two years. I wasn't paying attention before then, as we didn't have bees.

    The Honey Factory

We picked up a nuc of bees, got them installed in the hive. One got into my bee jacket, but amazingly enough, I did not get stung. That was a bit of stress that I did not need. But it could have been worse; a bee could have died.

Our basswood trees are NOT going to bloom this year. :(

What about 9 frames in an 8 frame box? They fit.

    The Honey Factory

Plastic foundation. I recently bought (3) 8-frame deep boxes. I found that 9 frames will fit. Should I put in a 9th frame? We started with used equipment, and they guy had built the boxes. They are about 1/4" narrower than boxes purchased from Mann Lake or Dadant. The hive opening on the...

Keeping honeybees is kind of like having chickens, in a way. There can be significant cost up front, and you might not get anything (honey) for awhile. However, I can pet my chickens. I don't pet my bees.

We got rid of the land line about 15(?) years ago; too much static on it. Someone would come out and "fix" it, but it would be back in a couple weeks.

:lau No wonder I feel even more out of it! I never "do" any of that stuff on my phone.

    The Honey Factory

My problem with pictures on my phone is that unless I have the "between the phone and computer" cable, the computer doesn't see the phone. I only have one working USB port (don't know what's wrong with the other one), and I have the wireless mouse thingie in it. Yes, I can use the touch pad...

    The Honey Factory

We saw a maple tree in bloom yesterday. I think it's too early; what type of low temps can they withstand? We have 20s overnight in the next week. It is too warm for this time of year, with waves of warm days/nights, and then more seasonable temps. Fruit farmers are worried. So far, no buds...

I used Apivar last spring and Formic Pro in August/September. You can use Formic when you have honey supers on.

We added some patties to the hive. Lots of bees out and flying! I saw a couple over on the compost pile.

We'll be checking them tomorrow. Today was warm, but very windy. I saw them flying just a couple days ago. I've ordered a nuc to replace the hive that died. It'll be available in June.
