Making Lemonade [Selective Culling Project - very long term]

I thought I'd lose some of my 5 y/o hens over the winter, but they all made it. Instead, I lost 2 of the 2 y/o hens. My favorite ones, of course. I have 8, feel like 10 (maybe plus a rooster) is the maximum for my space. They're all confined; too many predators on the ground and in the air for...

My girls' egg laying is winding down for the season. It's been a good egg season this year, for their ages. I definitely need to get chicks next spring. The egg skelter will be emptied with tomorrow morning's breakfast. I have 2 dozen in the fridge, and 36-ish waterglassed in the basement...

Oh, definitely. I recently lost a chicken to salpingitis. She wasn't a high production breed. She had had coccidiosis as a chick; I don't know if the two are related.

Strength and luck. Yup. Substitute hard work for strength, that's how most people get anywhere meaningful on the road of life. I can't deny we've had some good luck along the way, but hubby and I sure worked hard to get where we are.

I'm sorry about the lost chick. Things like that happen, but it's still sad.

I like 8. It's a cube, and the shape has nice symmetry. 9 is great too; it's a square, and Beethoven's 9th is my favorite piece of music. Yeah, I'm a weirdo.

I know what you mean! Lots of stuff to do in the garden, but if it rains, well, this mess is a house.

I'd take some of your rain, gladly! It's not as bad as last year/year before last, but I'm getting a bit nervous about how dry it seems to be. And chances of rain that dwindle and disappear. The half inch/one inch of rain was under a quarter. The Sunday rain might not happen. Then I see the...
