Sorry I took so long to answer. I didn't use a heat lamp in the beginning of winter but then predators took a lot of my birds and we had to move them to a more predator safe pen so we added a heat lamp.
Wow I was so tired last night I read that as anyone in Ottawa OR Ontario....I was all pumped up and going to send a message but my phone needed to recharge so I figured I would wait till morning. Good thing I did.

I am so excited! I thought I was going to miss it but now it us looking like we will make it!
I know I tend to baby them but when I have to drive a long way to pick up chicks I stop a few times to give them water and food. I know they don't really need it but it make me feel better.
It is a blast. They have a big farmers market in town and they have hay wagons pulled by tractors that you can ride to get around town. They have a breakfast with chicken sausage. They have chicks hatching all day long and little baby chicks for kids to hold. I can hardly wait.
So is anyone planning on going to POULTRYFEST on June 28th in Smithville?

Marans are very expensive birds. I paid 15 dollars a piece for straight run week old chicks.
You could check kijiji. That is how I found mine. The person I got them from was just selling chicks he had hatched from eggs he bought he doesn't normally have them or I would just give you his email.
