Your hens may be worn out by those guys! I answered your PM about sources, I think you'll be happiest getting them locally. I have hens only, I didn't want the coimplications of a rooster. Good exhibitions with poultry divisions this fall in Truro, and the 4-H provincial show has good...

And Sue, most communities have local feed stores, feed mills, co-ops or agricultural supply places that offer a couple of hatchings locally. You usually have to drop in and pre-order for May or June day olds. Ours were acquired this way and we had great luck. Other options include heritage...

I wish you well, Heather- an evolved notion and Vancouverites should respond well, I hope! We've had 3 blizzards so far. An average winter is 5 and it's not even Christmas! This is our house, made of BC logs brought to Nova Scotia in the 1970's. So we have a little part of BC here...

I do use hay, especially in the nest boxes, and I use bales to let the girls jump down from platforms inside and out. I like shavings for the floor, but with a loft full of hay, I wouldn't be stuck for bedding!

Yes, I heard the Quebec fire really made the difference. It's the shavings I use, and found a local guy who is thinking about covering the shavings he makes from cutting shakes. He uses maple, birch, poplar, elm...my backup plan. I should be all right until March or so, and I have a little...

Snow out west, snow in the middle, snow heading east YAGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! Wanted to mention shortages of bedding in certain places across Canada. Because of those $400 rebates given to pellet stove buyers there is a shortage of pellets. Huge numbers of sawmills and other businesses are...

I bought mine at less than 12 hours of age from the local co-op in Brooklyn, Hants County. I live near there in Centre Rawdon. If you want layers, I'd recommend a local breeder (everybody chime in please) or your local co-op in a community on this list...

Bear River? You have that sewage treatment that's a greenhouse with floating plants- awesome! You also live in a microclimate and have plants we can't grow in the rest of the province, like apricots. Great choice! We're about 250 miles to your east.

Hi meadow muffin and welcome! La Banan is probably the closest BYC member to you. I'm in Hants Country, Centre Rawdon with first layers, hatched May 15. We're averaging 10 eggs a day, and getting ready to supplement light before dawn. Happy Thanksgiving!
