Ugh, that is going to make for a long summer.
If you have a chicken run, could you just leave them in it? Maybe put a padlock or something on it, so the kid can't get in?
(Or alternately, let the chickens out and put the kid in the run!)
I wonder how many times you can all get together at a...
I just happened across an update on this situation.
Only a few days after the articles we were all complaining about, the shelter apparently did manage to find no-kill pet homes for all those meat chicks...
Why not?
If the person is just worrying about what sex their chicken is, and wanting an answer that is 100% positive when that is not yet possible, I don't see that hurting the chickens in any way
Maybe it's a matter of which part of the pants were tight?
Or maybe the person should have worn a different pair of pants for now, and saved that pair until after the baby weight was lost?
They sort of acknowledge that:
"One concern for the shelter, Parana explained, was the increasing demand for space and feed over time, as Freedom Rangers take about ten weeks to reach maturity."

Of course it would be more efficient to just euthanize them now, instead of buying a bunch of food and hiring extra staff to care for them.
Or they could take the really cost-efficient way out and sell them to the people that want to buy them (the article said there were such people.)
But they...
Then again, sometimes it is even more stupid to NOT ask the question. If you think it's a reasonable question, you may be headed for problems if you don't learn a bit more on the subject!
But that doesn't cover all kinds of stupid questions. I've seen people ask "What breed is it?" or "how old...
Is that the same chick that might have pasty butt? There's a dry lump right in the middle of the belly, and it just won't come off. Should I scrub harder?
[Because I'm afraid of this turning up in a google search at some point in the future, with no useful context, here are the answers: the red...
People seem to have some weird mental blank spots about wisdom tooth removal. I know one person that woke up from anesthesia and said (through a mouthful of gauze) that she couldn't go home, because her wisdom teeth hadn't been taken out yet. I know at least two people that had experiences in...
That was how I read it: spending $600 on fencing instead of spending $600 on an lgd. (At that price, I'm presuming it would have to be an untrained puppy, so if the person skipped the puppy they could then buy more fencing with the money they aren't spending on dog food and vet bills while the...
But I would like to see them all learn basic skills (like arithmetic and reading.) At some levels of learning, it does make sense to be sure everyone masters it before moving on to the next skill (especially if the next one builds on this one: like recognizing numbers before you learn addition...
Can you predict what happens if I cross my BR (Buff Rock) with my BCM (Black Copper Marans) and then breed the chicks with a BA (Blue Andalusian)?
What if I use the other BR (Barred Rock) with the other BCM (Blue Cuckoo Marans) and then the other BA (Black Australorp)?
Or maybe I've got a Blue...
I agree.
When I don't have broodies, I like heat lamps for raising baby chicks. For me, that means the heat lamp is in one corner of the brooder, and the chicks can get well away from it to play in cool conditions. And I don't bother reducing the temperature, either. I just make sure they have...
I've seen children try to stick fingers in an electrical outlet, but I've never seen one actually succeed. The holes in the outlet are smaller than the fingers. (This might be different for other children or other styles of outlets.)
And I know a child that pulled a cord partway out, then stuck...
Depending on the context, it doesn't bother me too much:
"This pen has the big chicks, that one has the baby chicks, and the adults are over there."
The bird is a "chick" for quite a while, but grows a lot and needs very different levels of care at different points.
One year when turkeys were on sale cheap, I did an experiment that turned out to work pretty well: I thawed the turkey in the fridge until it was soft enough to cut but still had a few ice crystals, then I cut it into smaller sections and re-froze it. A turkey leg/thigh section made a good size...
