It shouldn't be a problem selcting for the squirrel tail with the various breeds that you are using. In my experience it's a lot easier to get a high tail than it is to get a low tail. Nice looking fowl.
25 years ago I had an Amish friend that tried using a kerosene incubator. It was a hit and miss experience at best. He gave it up after several months as he was only getting 40% hatch rates. He considered the 60% non hatchers a waste of good eggs and from then on bought chicks.
I'm not purposely contesting anything that you're saying or describing just sharing my thoughts on the matter.
The picture of a Saipan that Cackle hatchery has on their website is very similar to what a Saipan is supposed to look like. In my experience however, the Saipan you will actually get...
Personal opinion here:
I think if someone took the time and had the patience and space, they could create a breed that almost exactly resembles the original Saipan. It would take several years of hatching a lot and critical selection based on type and disposition and not on personal favorites...
I think you're right.
Are you getting them from a hatchery?
I used to know someone from Kentucky that had the real Saipan chickens. I saw some pictures of his Saipan and they really resembled a Malay. Not exactly like a Malay, but very similar.
Do you think the Marans gamefowl cross rooster might bring too much brown egg genetics into the mix? Are you also wanting a muff/beard on your Rainbow runners? The visual of what you describe that you're wanting to create is almost too much for the brain to process, but a lot of the breeds we...
You have a good point, that means no dark brown egg layers, just cream or tinted/light brown. Do you already have that egg color gene in your breeders?
Or you put the Heritage Plymouth Barred Rock rooster over one or two of your Malays. Using the Malays as the female will help you retain the Malay carriage and station more as the female contributes a bit more to the genotype than the male. The male does just as much with the color as the females.
