It's lovely to see activity in this group again and to hear everyone's updates. I had given up hope of any eggs before spring until I saw some of you were starting to get some. Then I couldn't believe it today, I got my first three!
I have 5 Australorp pullets and one Light Sussex pullet from...
I'm sorry to hear about your poor little chick.
I've never had a mama chicken hen raise chicks but I hope to be doing that in the future so I'm interested to see what others say about that.
I did have peahens hatch peachicks and they brought them out and about with them from day one, as soon...
Oh, I'm so sorry to hear about poor little Anastasia. I'm sure she knew you really tried your best and it sounds like she had a lot of love during her short little time here.
I'd love to know how you can tell if they are DIS or just behind. Is the shadowing you mention something you can see when you're candling? Or are you just looking for movement?
I can't believe they won't eat the mealworms!
My La Bresse are turning their noses up at scrambled egg. I've never had a bird not go mad for it and it's my go to for when I need to give them a boost. I don't know what to make of it. It's like they don't think it's food! They also don't seem to...
Yes, it is a dilemma. I really don't know and I wish I did. I just know that in my limited experience of the two hatches I have done, when a chick made a pip hole big enough that I could actually see in and observe the beak, I noticed that they really didn't wait very long to start unzipping...
I am not experienced by any means but when I helped my little one the other day I followed the instructions in this article and was very careful not to deviate from them.
Is she trying to get out and can't manage or is she still resting and chewing?
Thank you! I'm delighted with them!
The last little one to hatch isn't doing great. She's just a bit weak and sleepier than the others, not good on her feet and not really eating or drinking on her own yet. I've been giving her egg, Kaytee baby bird food and an electrolyte, probiotic + vitamin...
My hatch is finally finished and I have 16 babies! I would have updated sooner but I was glued to the incubator for 36 hours and after that I was way too exhausted to do anything, even type!
So two of the 18 eggs that went into lockdown didn't make it. One never pipped internally and another...
I'm just starting day 20 as I type. I have 10 pips but only 4 of them are in the air cell. So that's 6 malpositioned so far! One of them has hit a blood vessel but it's still alive so hopefully it will be ok. I can see some beak movement under the pip.
I'm still waiting for 8 more pips and I'm...
I know! It's so exhausting. I thought I'd try to get some extra rest ahead of time in preparation this time round but it's not happening. It's too exciting!
I'm half way through day 19 now and I'm hearing some cheeping! My eggs that have lost too much weight are wobbling around so much. I...
I'm on day 18 now! I've candled and weighed again. All 18 eggs are alive and lots are wobbling around.
I'm still worried about the huge variation in weight loss. Here's the final % for day 18. I'm hoping the couple that have lost the least will still draw down a bit more today. I'm really...
Yes, hopefully not! I have a sort of make shift solution to plug the incubator in on a long extension lead from my car in an emergency but it's not ideal. Hopefully I'll never have to use it.
