Addendum
Tamar's primaries have been trimmed so she won't step on them anymore, and underneath her wing was cleaned with epsom salt solution, then sprayed with biogel. After I put her down she headed for a nesting box.
When I walked up to the coop a fight broke out, between Abigail and momma Naomi. They were flying/jumping up in the air, breast to breast, beating their wings. Silas ran over and appeared to be trying to break it up.
I've never seen any fighting between the hens, not like that. I suspect Naomi...
I am sorry.
I have not candled the eggs I put in the incubator a week ago. The egg turner thingamajiggy doesn't turn eggs as programmed, so I push the manual button in the morning, and again at supper, and before bed.

Chick Roll Call!
They are probably one of the OE breeds, based upon the chick photos on Hoover's website. Anyone want to hazard a guess? They are bantams, and their legs are cream to light yellow. I believe they were hatched a week ago, 6/23 or 6/24.

I was able to talk to a vet online. They suggested epsom salts (someone here did so as well) and then a hydrogel spray. Found the latter at TS. I soaked gauze in an epsom salt solution, applied it to the area under Tamar's wing for a couple minutes. She actually stopped struggling, the cool...
Good one!
My great niece is about 7, loves animals, wants to be a farmer. I send my sister pictures and videos of my chickens to share. Her granddaughter said "Naomi was teaching them, one egg and one egg equals 2 eggs"
:love
I was thinking of how chicks can get stuck, and suddenly recalled a situation with one of the Dominiques. I went to the coop, noticed one of them was not with the others, went looking, and found her upside-down, head and neck stuck in a wire basket. I freed her, and held her on my lap for a bit...
Today the chicks were going out through the gap in the corner. I won't be around to rescue them tomorrow, so I blocked it. Literally.
Hopefully none of them get stuck, again. In this heat it could be fatal.
After lunch I brought some tuna fish to the flocks. It was Ron's. I don't eat it, and the chickens LOVE it. I split the can between the two flocks.
While I was in the second coop I noticed that the chicks weren't clustered around Naomi, but were running around and through the other hens, and...
Addendum 2: in the Sussex coop Hannah started making weird noises, like a jungle bird cry "Ah ah ah". It just occurred to me...is she thinking about going broody, too? She's the only hen from the original three that did not hatch eggs. I'd give her a couple from the incubator if she does go broody.
Addendum: another member here at BYC recommended making mash from crumble and water when one of my chicks had pastybutt. She said eating mash helps them stay hydrated, and that pastybutt could be caused by lack of fluids. I started feeding mash to my chicks, and in subsequent hatches have not...
Good morning!
Naomi took her chicks back in the brooder at dusk. I shut the door, opened it this morning. She tried to lead them out into the coop, but they were busy feeding on the spilled crumble. I mixed water and crumble together in a bottle cap, offered it to the chicks and they dug in...
And on a happy note, Naomi brought her brood out into the run at some point today, mid-morning.
One of the chicks found an opening under the wood frame, where the hens have scratched holes. It was cheeping in distress, protected from the world by hardware cloth, but unable to find its way back...
