What would cause an emu chick to almost fully develop and then die? I ordered two hatching eggs with chance of blond/white, and one hatched (blonde). The other I broke the egg open at 60 days and it was dead (also blonde), but was almost fully formed and just had some of the yolk sac left to...
So out of 7 emu eggs that I ordered, 5 of them hatched! I posted 3 of them on a chicken swap group for my area tonight and they are pending pickup tomorrow. I’m not sure if it’s because it’s early in the season, but I’m super excited that it seems like it’ll be pretty easy to sell emu chicks...
What is the earliest anyone on this thread has had an emu lay an egg? My adult emus are only 13-14 months old, but it looks like they have started trying to mate… is there a chance the female will have eggs this year?
Baby emu hatched this morning!
It hasn’t really started walking yet, it scoots around the brooder and stands up a bit like in the below pic, but it doesn’t walk. Mostly just sleeps and cheeps back at me when I whistle or cheep at it. Is not walking normal for the first day?
External pipping is when it breaks through the egg.
Absorbing yolk is the emu chick taking in nutrients from the yolk in the egg. The yolk should be completely absorbed by the time it hatches.
After you hear an egg whistle, approximately how much time does it take to start hatching? The egg has been wiggling and whistling when I talk to it for the past 24 hours or so, but hasn’t externally pipped yet.
When do you all stop turning your emu eggs? My first egg has been wiggling everyday and I just heard it make noise. It was tilting a lot but now it’s starting to even back out a little so I’m thinking it’s probably internally pipped.
The people who I got a couple emu eggs from locally said that their emu was taking longer between laying this year. For the past couple years she laid every 3 days like clock work, but this year, it’s been between 5-7 days for most eggs.
I started mine in a NR 360 but it’s easier for me to keep my humidity consistent in my hovabator so I switched to that. I had a riser on the NR 360, but if you have smaller eggs you could do without the riser. Can you ask the seller how much the eggs weigh?
