    Boxes for storing canning jars

Also, I came across a recommendation of activated charcoal as part of managing storage in basements. It is sold for odor control in such spaces so is available at local stores in reasonable quantities at reasonable prices for this purpose. There are directions for making your own for about a...

Design considerations for trollies Here for reference because I'm abandoning the trolley system plan for now. Good news is finding 1/2" foam board insulation which was being carried until recently. $14 is much better than $30 somthing or $40 something and I want the vapor barrier, not the...

Hm. Maybe the side-to-side slider version isn't so far fetched. I know some libraries use tracks under the stacks. Homemade railroaf I don't need the engine; that seems to be the difficult part. Or a working version rather than a toy Irish version Maybe it doesn't gain me much, though. I...

    Boxes for storing canning jars

Yes, I'll downsize as much as I can. All the easy stuff is gone as we went from a house that fit 8 people comfortably to an apartment with two big storage units to this house/garage and gradually stepped down the sizes/numbers of storage units. Then just the house and garage. Then cleared the...

    Boxes for storing canning jars

Meh. It is probably better to pull them out into a walkway along the ends of the stacks. I think I have a source of casters. If not, I might look for an alternative - maybe a way to slide them easier than the whole stack along the floor.

I've seen people use foam insulation panels to keep boxes off cement floors. The local big box stores recently started stocking the 1" thick versions in 4'x8' sheets. That is more affordable than the 2" versions. It is still plastic, though. An alternative is to build wooden racks. That could...

Next project... getting the rest of the boxes off the basement floor. Preferably, in a way that makes them easily assessable and condensed so we have more open space in the basement. Off the floor because I have lots of boxes of books, quite a few of fabric (clothes and linens and such as well...

Progress but not done yet. I got close enough to done to start living with it to see what needs to be adjusted. Also, other things had been neglected long enough. These boxes are mostly empty. That way, it is much easier to shift them around until I get a fit I like. That will help with cutting...

It fits!!!!! On the first try!!!!!! The second piece of plywood!!! (Grain front to back; the first piece has grain side to side). And the brace for the second shelf is level by just setting it there (on top of temporary spacers)!!! Snoopy Dance!!!!!!!!! This is why I spent all that blood...

This is not the concise summary. I thought if I just paid enough attention, numbers would behave. They don't. This is different than forgetting a measurement. Or transposing a number. Or being sloppy. Although I do all that too. Measuring twice, cutting once doesn't help. Much anyway. Measuring...

    Boxes for storing canning jars

I'll make a concise summary in a later post so this post can be skipped. It is dark o'clock Thursday morning and I gave up trying to sleep. My mind is spinning with "have to do this before I do that, opps doing this makes the other thing a problem." Apologies for cluttering up the site if I end...

    Boxes for storing canning jars

Today, I looked at the shelf mess and thought of three conflicting ways to proceed. So I mowed the grass and leaves of the lawn and turned them into the compost pile. That took all day - lots of very big trees dropping leaves. Then came in and looked up "torsion box calculations" and copied a...

    Boxes for storing canning jars

I made one torsion box. I need much, much, much better craftsmanship but it is close enough that I learned a lot. And close enough that I could set empty jar boxes to see how the spacing works and where I can borrow from if needed. It is not glued, nailed, or screwed - it is just dry fitted. I...

    Boxes for storing canning jars

Yesterday, I found 15/32 plywood in the purple pile (70% off pile) with a damaged corner that fit into the scrap left after I had all the shelves I could fit anyway. Yes, I have scrap now because we made the shelves deeper than planned. They are 23" deep because that is where the floor joists...

Oh, I'm going to play with mortise and tenon some other time - the plain notch made more sense here. And, yes, the horizontal beam comes forward at an angle acute enough to slide a big dowel between it and the front post. This is because I didn't think to check that the stud in the back was not...

    Boxes for storing canning jars

So far... I took the pictures while sitting on the floor in front of it. The first picture (the bottom shelf) has the back beam in the place. The second picture (the top shelf) has the cut out for the back beam but doesn't have the beam in place. In the second picture, the plywood is the shelf...

    Boxes for storing canning jars

A torsion box might be a good solution other than quite tedious to make. And I forgot about that option before I went shopping today yesterday thevother day for a piece of plywood. I had the store make the cuts so I can't return it. I found 1/2" plywood in 4 ply for what I thought was only a...

We are stalled. Dh won't build anything chintzy. I don't want to give up as much vertical space as he thinks is needed for horizontal support beams. He won't look at the sagolator. He offered smaller horizontal support beams if we put more posts in. If we do that the way he is thinking (more...

Lol. Actually, if we hadn't had these 2x4s, we still wouldn't have bought anything for this part. We would have used the 4x4's we pulled out of ground last year from a fence the people who lived here before didn't maintain. Way, way, way overkill but it would get them out of our way in the garage.

    Boxes for storing canning jars

I edited to clearify... took them down to the basement. 🙂 Now they are screwed to the sides of the floor joists above each of them. They end a few inches below the floor (the floor of living area above, so ceiling, I guess but it isn't "ceiled" so... whatever it should be called) because it is...
