    Larkwell Valley (2023)

Many years ago when I still lived in Ottawa, we had a sudden flash freeze and rescuers had to go out on the river to free the mallards that got frozen in place. It was horrible. Ducks were ripping themselves out of the ice to the point of ripping their skin off. :(

Laying on wet ground and got stuck to the ice? Or rather, it got colder and the water froze and trapped the bird.

That's really nasty. Stay warm! All of you! We're still having roller-coaster weather here. Again today, near the thawing point and plunging into Way Too Cold overnight. Tomorrow will be worse though, if only for the fact we're expecting over a foot of snow overnight and into Thursday. The...

If they're that old then probably fixed (I still think it should be called *broken*!). I feel bad for them. As for your unknown predator, do you have a trail cam? Possibility of camping out and hunting it? IS IT A WENDIGO??

Yeah, foxes are not that big. Dang. Please stay safe, all of you! Glad to hear the cat is finally down. Sad that she is probably not spayed though.

Dang. Sorry to hear that Jacin... We thankfully don't have cougars in the area (four legged kind anyhow!) but do have coyotes. Apart from three years ago when I first moved here they haven't come near the house. Coons and foxes and rodents and small snakes is about the extent of it.

If I had access to a gun I'd probably do it different. I dislike using a knife. But for me, it makes it more personal and keeps it 'real', if you know what I mean. Sorry about you losing all those babies. Hopefully they do better in warm weather!

What do you mean "they get stuff"? What I do is a bit more hands on. I actually lay the duck on the ground and sit on them (lightly but firmly, to keep them from flapping). I stretch out their neck by holding on to the head, hand over the eyes to calm them, and speak gently to them. It's a...
